nissan wireless cars

Saw 2 brand new nissan cars today, not sure of the model, that were trailing each other by about 200 feet. I noticed a fatty omni directional antenna on the car trailing. I pulled up closer to notice the antenna was from hyperlinktech. That really sparked me to catch up closer.

As I pulled up to the trailing car I noticed their pimp setup. One driver, and one sittin shotty controlling a laptop on a profesionally mounted stand. On the front windshield they had some sort of antenna-range detector suction cupped pointed towards the leader car.

The leader car also had a nice omni and also another antenna mounted on the roof that resembled a GPS antenna you see on vans and fed ex trucks. But it was much much smaller. Rear facing antenna-range detector also mounted in rear windshield. Once again, driver and shotty w/laptop.

My guess is that they were running some possible tests for automatic drive control and distancing. They had manufacturers plates and i've never seen that car model before. Anyone else see anything like this before? I live in michigan, used to be near alot of proving grounds and tests tracks for ford and gm but this was right on the xpress way. Would love it if they were pimpin 802.11b. Too bad i didn't have my laptop w/me. would've ran stumbler and sniffer wireless scannin channels. Well maybe next time!

ill put my money on a distance warning type application. Maybe not auto drive (that would be bad ass thought) Did the driver have his hands on the wheel?

Stanford (I think) had a Pent I ~300MHz driving a car with "slaves" following about 2-3 years ago. It was on Discovery Channel.

If Nissan is doing real world testing, whether distance warning or something else, then a car-to-car AdHoc WLAN makes a lot of sense.

anybody else ever tried ad-hoc while moving? it'd be phat to have an irc server or something to chat between members of a caravan. =) we used frs radios on the way to a concert once but sharing files, chatting, maybe some gaming... that's the life right there. now if we could just manage a satellite uplink and infrastructure mode......... hmmmm...... ::scratches chin and looks to the sky::

I think they had that in the original Revenge of the Nerds. (Look for a VERY young Anthony Edwards as one of the head nerds.) They had a 6" satellite dish that looked like it was made out of a vegatable steamer.

...hmmm...

"Honey, where's that little veggy steamer thing? The one we don't use too much? What? No, nothing... But I'll be down in the workshop for a couple of hours..."

Mobile WLAN

On the way up the Hannover for CEBIT 2002, my friends
and I tried this out...

There were 3 cars. Car 1 & 3 had Laptops/Lucent Gold Cards &
Omni's on top.. Car 2 had a Linksys WAP11 also with ext Antt.

Now we had been told that WLAN connections will work
on moving cars at up to 40-50mph but loose the signal
after that. Well It got me thinking that maybe they were
correct IF the AP was fixed at a certain location, but what
would happen if both the AP and the clients were moving
at 40-60mph or faster.....

Well, we got all the cars within .5-1k together and cranked it
up. We were able to connect/chat/xfer files etc. The only thing
we didn't have was an Internet connection. I guess we could
have but running it at 9600 on a cell phone would not only be
VERY slow but also a lot of $$$...

This setup worked fine as long as all cars stayed within range,
even up to 190KPH, but at any speed it's best to have a
driver/operator combination so you will get to where you are going, in one piece.

Try it out,and post the results/pictures, but PLEASE BE CAREFULL.

What did the cars look like? Usually when a manufacturer tests something they add extra panels to the car so you don't know what it looks like, and paint it black and white checker board style so camera auto focus wont work.

MadHatter, why did you use the WAP11? Or putting it a different way, why didn't you just go with an AdHoc peer to peer mode?

Just curious.

Because I could....
And because We also had 2 Wired PC in the back on a Switch.

It stillamazes me just how much stuff you can power
off an Inverter.

Mobile Setup

Almost forgot,

Make sure your Antt. are REALLY, and I mean REALLY
Attached to something. We had a prob. with this when
we started.... But it's nothing Military grade 100MPH
tape can't handle

I suppose you could also use the WAP11 Hack to
gain some more coverage/distance/get a stronger
signal.

Sidenote: Ya'll should have seen the face the Hotel
Manager had when we unloaded 2 large
trunks full of "LAN PARTY" Gear...

what amazes me is how much i can't power off an inverter... that is, when the car is turned off. i think i'm going to have to buy a new battery for my car because i've just killed mine one too many times. i think batteries are like cats, they have more than 1 life but they're not immortal.

er.... they're not mortal either. you get the point.

I think it's time someone developed a PowerStumbler plug in...so when you get closer to those juicy access points, you can roll out some cord and plug in.
