OK Blackwave... You win :)
Well, I had some time to play with the Sony Vaio and with the internal 802.11b it was next to impossible to get NetStumbler to recognize a PCMCIA network card. I disabled the internal via hardware manager, turned off the physical switch and it was still a pain... more than I felt like I wanted to deal with while traveling... so... I took it back and got the Blackwave special. I picked up the ipaq 3975 with the expansion pack plus. Thanks for posting all your info BW, it helped in my decision making.

Re: No! No! No! VAIO SRX + NS = "don't leave home w/o it"

Another frustrating quirk about the Vaio, was downloading a 12Meg file from the internet. Both the internal and PCMCIA Silver card would disconnect at around the 10Meg pont and never resume. Updating the Agre driver recommended by Windows Update and Updating the Orinoco client drivers didn't help at all. I attempted this process at least 6 times on each card, even with the Vaio within a few feet of the Access point. The only way I could download a 12Meg file was to physically plug the Vaio into my network via an Ethernet cable. Those two factors were enough to tell me that this was going to be way more trouble than I wanted when traveling. The Vaio is only about an inch longer and wider than my Solo 3450, so the only plus to the Vaio was the built in 802.11 which was more trouble than it was worth. Keep us posted on your Vaio and all your adventures! It's a neat little machine. Thanks for your reply, -Jay Last edited by DigitalMDX : 07-29-2002 at 08:25 AM. |
