Radio Controlled Model

Ok,

This thought just came to me, some older folks may be able to shoot this down rather quickly.

Back a few years ago, I used to race Radio Controlled cars, boats, and planes. It is apparent that these models might allow a motivated individual to take a small ministumbler setup into a location where he/she might not otherwise be "priviledged".

Radio controlled cars may be able to get onto the grounds of a guarded, or "watched" parking lot to get closer to the access point.

For the talented individual, a radio controlled plane or glider could get close to a building from an elevated position, where camera's or other devices do not normally watch.

These types of techniques probably should not be attempted during business hours and also require the operator to be somewhat nearby.
From what I know, radio controlled plane's can reach up to a half mile or further.

As far as I know, private businesses have no "airspace" regulations, as long as you are not on the "grounds" is it still tresspassing? Most importantly, where one hobby begins and the other ends is a judgement call for the operator. *intent*

"no, i didn't see this on saturday morning cartoons last week, did you?"

couple questions I'd have are what would the duration of your RC unit be? Unless it moved in then was stationary, I suspect a RC unit would run out of gas/juice fairly quickly.. even a stationary one would run out of battery power.

second issue would be range of the radio units.. most don't go very far. A strong directional antenna would be a more practical use, imo.

Get the blimp.

I have seen blimps that are remotely controlled. The problem with them is the wind.

I personally think that an RC pile of Sh!t would be the best solution. Like who is going to pick up a pile of sh!t?

LOL

RC Rocks

An RC model would be ideal if you could get a decent payload aboard. Even if it's detected, what is anyone going to do about it? What would really be neat is to control it via 802.11b

You have one problem...

..with controlling it with the freq you're trying to detect and monitor. Can you guess what that would be?! LOL

Perhaps, I could see why someone would want to steal it, with $800 of gear in the bed. But I wouldn't take it on private property

MORE IDEAS

Helicoptor
(this would be a good "remote router relocator" lets say you were in a situation where you wanted to have internet access only for a short while, but you are behind an obstacle. put a small-form factor router on this baby and float it into a better position between your antenna and the desired target, leave it there for a few hours, then take off and "call her home")

Airplane/Glider
(downtown park would be a good place to use this... good for RF leakage surveys, only the GPS would be too heavy [find the lightest GPS] You can glide for hours because after you get the plane in the air, you turn the propeller off and just run on the radio batteries (4xAA) which can last 10 or more hours, [22-27mhz is a guess])

Monster Truck 4WD
(a real workhorse. it can haul several batteries along with the stumbling setup which might include Linux on a Sharp Zaurus)

Carpet Racer
(carpet, asphalt - high speed, designed for the short fast run can't think of where i might use this... any ideas?)

micro covert operative, you forgot one...

The "Public Works Sniffer"! <--pew!

You build a small system and flush it down the toilet! You can tether it and/or have it emit its own RF signal so you can find it with a locator!

I guess you could tether it with ethernet (plenum! {SP?}) and get your data that way as well as power the unit!

LOL

i think this is about the time that carrier pigeon technology comes in. they don't break down, they'll always fly home, and it doesn't involve flushing hundreds of dollars in equipment down the toilet! besides, carrier pigeon technology is currently voted about equally as promising as 802.11b itself by netstumblers. =)

Has anyone built a RC-Stumbling device?

I was thinking of getting an iPAQ with a CF WiFi and put it on a midsize helicopter and attempt to use the ministumbler? I would like to know if anyone has tried this as of yet? Would be more fun than functional... but it could be added to the war-tools.

... to the batmobile!

Why not just take an unpowered balloon, strap an omni to it, a battery pack, and some way to boost the signal? I.E. a very high repeater...
