Since I already had a laptop at my disposal, my choice was already made for me... BUT, if I had it to do all over again, I'd definately go with the iPAQ. Just from the conveniance and concealibility standpoint. If memory serves correct, the iPAQ uses Winders CE, and all you really need is the PCMCIA cradle and a wireless card and you're pretty good to go. As for a larger antenna, well, again, that depends on your application. If you're in an environment where you can walk and get to just about any area (or close to), like a college campus, or down town in a major metro area, then personally, I doubt if I'd go for the big ears. However, if you're anything like me and you spend a lot of time driving, then maybe a good omni yagi is what you need. And if you're a dumbass like me and don't understand the math behind building antennae, then you may want to do some research and find a commersial version. But, yet again, it's all personal requirements. Hope that helps, bws |

Comment about antennae in general: An omni is preferable for just wardriving, as it will receive equally from all directions. A directional, because it only looks in a narrow direction will miss many APs that aren't in that plane. Think about binoculars; better seeing in that direction, but a very narrow field of vision.

i like ministumbling w/ the ipaq because it's more discreet and easier to deal with both in the car and walking. 2) the gain on the silver & gold are the same. it's the same h/w only diff is the f/w for 128bit WEP in the gold. 3) like the others said, omni is the way to go to find the AP's. bws, yagi's are directional, not omni.

Being lucky enough to have both for my business I find I use the iPAQ more than the laptop for stumbling due to ease of use and convenience however if you want to go serious and do penetration testing and vulnerability assesment (all with the permission of the network admin of course) you will need the laptop to do it properly.
As far as antenna's go I have a mag mount omni for the car and a omni-blade with velcro for walking. |

which you can take out and put into the ipaq. for the GPS, just make sure the unit you get does NMEA output. what maps they can handle is dependent on the software you use, not the GPS hardware (unless you are looking for a h/w & s/w bundle)

thanks for the money saver. . . I'll be taking the card out when strolling and in for surfing. .
I imagine it just slots back in (like a PCI adapter?)

http://www.frars.org.uk/cgi-bin/render.pl?pageid=1089 basically, the top just pops off the bottom. i usually don't bother snapping the top onto the bottom all the way so it's easy to open up the case.
