software setup

Hey everyone, I just joined the wireless networking world. I have my home net set up with a linksys AP/router and an orinoco gold card on the laptop. wep is set at 128bit and im surfing in the yard.

Ive been messing about with NS on my way to from work and its really cool discovering all the networks set up around town. My next step will be a GPS so I can record locations as well.

Thats where my question comes in. what programs are people using to map locations out there? I can see NS will record APs with gps coordinates and it looks like i can upload my logs to the site her and it will convert those into a form i can use to log into a database... this seems like a lot of steps. is that what everyone does?

is there a mapping program something like microsoft's streets and trips or something that I canconfigure to track as I go along?

thanks for any input...

Matt

Welcome Bullwinkle, all your 802.11b are belong to us.
My suggestions are to read the board, do some keyword searching on what you seek, and then start asking some structured questions...

Search for:
StumbVerter
MapPoint2002
Comfoolery

... remember that you need something that will share your gps data if you plan on stumbling and tracking realtime on a map at the same time.

I do believe that the defacto standard around the board for plotting/mapping gps info is MapPoint 2002, due to the fact that the nice patrons of this board have made neato com addins, extra applications to use data from NS to plot are APs and even Virtual com splitter apps so we can see where we've been on the map and pick up APs simultaneously.

Just taking a moment to thank everyone out there that contributes to a fast growing 'hobby' and those who help others out that are in need.
