Question Trying to assemble half decent kit

I've been putting this setup together piece by piece for the past couple of months.
It's still missing a few bits here and there. Most notably, I won't take delivery of the PDA until late next week at the earliest. I don't even know if it will work with the Avaya card, or if Mini Stumbler will like its built-in Wi-Fi, but I want the option of an external antenna anyway. So I guess I'll just have to experiment when it gets here.

If you see any glaring omissions or obvious incompatibilities please do point them out.

Do you recommend specific hardware or software additions to the kit?

Any advice is greatly appreciated by a warwalker taking his first tentative steps.

Thank you.

The kit

Sony Vaio VGN-S1XP
- 13.3" x-black WXGA 1200x800 widescreen
- PM 735, 1.7A GHz, 2MB L2, 90nm, 400MHz FSB
- 512MB DDR333 (will upgrade to 1GB)
- 60GB HD
- DVD-RW
- ATI M 9700 64MB
- 312.5mm x 224.8mm x 35.4mm
- 5+ hrs battery life with screen closed and optical drive & internal wireless disabled.

Win XP Pro SP1 (bollocks to SP2)
LAS Linux
Operator
Net Stumbler
MapPoint 2004 Europe

iPaq H5550
Dual PCMCIA expansion jacket
Generic CF TypeI/II to PCMCIA TypeII adapter
Lexar pro 80x 2GB TypeII Compact Flash.
HP Photosmart mobile camera.

Mini stumbler
WiFiFoFum

Avaya 700016009 802.11b PCMCIA

Unbranded 7dBi MagMount Omni, 6' with MC connector (No ground plane. Long crappy cable. This I must fix.)
Poyntings 13dBi Patch, 30cm pigtail, N Female
FAB Corp 12" LMR-100A N Male to MC Pigtail
Thirdheight 1m LMR-400 N Male to N Female

Generic USB GPS mouse
Garmin Etrex Vista with European base map
Garmin eType to RS232 cable
RS232 to USB adapter cable
Lynks BH124000 iPaq 55xx to Garmin eType cable

Well, what do you think?
Something still missing?
Something need upgrading?

Thanks again.

I will be taking pictures of all this when I get a couple more bits together.
Then I will post them here for your viewing pleasure.

Any comments welcome.

Just wanted to let you know that you can't distribute NS/MS in something you are selling. You will have to give them a link to download it.

What kind of price were you looking to get?

What the...?

This stuff isn't for sale!

What gave you that idea?

This isn't even the forum for selling things.

No.

This is me building my own stumbling kit, telling you all about it as I go, and asking for some constructive input along the way.

In UK English "kit" is "a collection pieces/parts for a particular purpose." What we would call a "setup" in US English.

In US English a kit is usually "a collection of parts for Do-It-Yourself assembly, sold in an unassembled condition".

That makes sence.

Please change the title if it is causing confusion.

My Tricorder!

Back on topic.

I've finally gotten around to taking pictures of some of this stuff.

First up, the PPC.

The first picture shows it all laid out.
  • HP iPaq 5550 PPC
  • Compaq original dual PCMCIA jacket
  • Avaya PCMCIA Wireless card
  • CF to PCMCIA adapter
  • Lexar Pro 2GB CF card
  • HP Photosmart mobile camera

It sure does look like a Tricorder when it's assembled, so that's what I call it. My Tricorder!

A couple more pics showing my view and an oblique view of the business end.

Antennae

Here are the antennae I'm currently using with the laptop.

Image shows:
  • Crappy 7dBi MagMount Omni, 6'LMR100A MC
  • Poyntings 13dBi Patch, 30cm pigtail, N Female
  • Thirdheight 1m LMR-400 N Male to N Female
  • FAB Corp 12" LMR-100A N Male to MC Pigtail
That omni is utter shite.
Total lack of ground plane and 6' of LMR100A.
Virtually all the gain is lost to its poor construction.
Not too bad on a car roof, though.
I guess it must make up for the lack of a ground plane.

The old "you get what you pay for" adage has come back to bite me in the arse as I was considering a $59.99 model from FAB Corp at the same time I got the pigtail.
Like the dope I am, I ended up going the eBay route for a fraction of the price but a fraction of the performance.

nice lil rig...

what you using for GPS?

what you might want to do is rig up some cantenna's

like these pics I have added.... the mount is PVC pipe with some pvc elboes', Tconnects and end caps...

1 - 10 foot pvc pipe, the ends, elboes and t connect plus a small can of pvc glue set me back about 10-12 bux from a home depot. how I hang it in my SUV is I have some bungy cords I just loop around the "Oh Shyt" handles in the back passenger seat area.. each can has a nice 90 degree aim out the window.. add a 2 to 1 antenna concentrator from FabCorp and 1 pc/handheld.. and you can "harvest" AP's at 60 miles a hour... in fact I call this unit the WapHarvestor 9000 hehehhe
