War FLYING

I don't know how many of you subscribe to the vuln-dev listserv, but this came across it and I thought it was both amusing and interesting at the same time. What next, war submarining?

From: "Matthew F. Caldwell" <mattc@guarded.net>

While conducting an aerial (yes FLY-BY hacking) wireless audit for a client, the following information was gleaned. I thought the statistics were nice to give a good perspective in a metropolitan area. The reason for flying was, well RF at high frequencies "line of sight" rules. This flight was conducted around 3000ft MSL with a 15db Gain Antenna mounted on the wing , and a Lucent gold card.

382 Access Points total Detected

191 Access Points had default SSID's (linksys, default, etc.)

92 Access Points had WEP

To sum up only 24% had WEP and 50 percent had default SSID’s, which means they more than likely, have default passwords etc.

Once again we all see how the general public will keep us all in our security jobs for a VERY long time.

"I have lots'o'money, set me up with wireless"
"But of course don't make it secure"

I have thought of stumble-flying myself. Kinda' hard to carry a Laptop (see http://www.eskimo.com/~delisle/ftp/p...de/flying.html ) while I am flying my paraglider. I'd probably need a little I-paq or something.
Could cover a bit of ground in a cross-country flight.

Pretty sweet, I have always wanted to try one of those. You may also need a high gain directional so you can warfly from a distance, I don't see one of those going over houses too well... How do they handle, btw? Are you actually flying, or are you just slowly falling?

Exclamation

They fly pretty well if there is enough thermal or ridge lift. I've gone 50 miles in one, and I know people who have done 3x that. It flys a little like a barkalounger tied to a jellyfish. 10 to 25 mph airspeed. A flight at the same mountain may be 5 min., or 5 hrs. Depends on the weather.

When I get something like an I-Pac I may just try a hanging a Pringles or yagi antenna below my harness. However I am usually 1,000 to 5,000 feet above the ground and I am unsure how much RF there is radiating to vertical plane.
