tadpoles & JFK...
"If that's anything like the Tadpoles I remember, it was only a Sparc 5, right? Also, if I recall, it was huge - at least the one we had a few years ago. Surely a recent P-II or P-III can vastly outperform a Sparc 5 on integer math..."
Nah, it's much more powerful than the SPARC 5's. We're running Ultrabook IIe's and IIi's from RDI - they have the UltraSPARC chipset. I had a IIi which has a gig of RAM, but recently got upgraded to the IIe which packs in 2 gig's plus has the cd-rom integrated. I know it's overkill, for anything we're doing here - unless you're brute forcing something. I was just curious if anyone had run any of the WEP crack tools on Solaris. They've got power, but are a real pain in the ass to carry anywhere, despite being "portable". They're horribly designed also - that is, from an appearance & ergonomics perspective. They're like giant bricks in a case, a really big case...I might as well strap an E450 to my back....the cd-rom drive alone for my old IIi was the size/weight of one of my wintel boxes. They're definitely not worth the $15000+ RDI charges for them (if that seems like a lot, they use to cost a lot more). I'm not even sure what the wi-fi driver support is like for these things - although I'm sure it's probably out there. I can't imagine too much demand for Solaris drivers. Incidentally, I think they retired the SPARC 5's a while ago (the motherboards also had very limited RAM capacity) - so, yes, most wintel's today would be more powerful. Tadpoles are still used frequently for military field apps, etc. - although I use them for other purposes. "Departure through JFK - that'll kill you" I haven't flown out of JFK in years - I guess that's a good thing though. : ) Anybody looked at using a "portable" yagi or patch? take it easy... |

Though I would love to see one of these on the news, with me interviewing with a female reporter... I could surely have fun with that... and I would certainly buy that for a dollar! Thanks to g0tr00t for the "artist rendering" you can all check it out here: Post Your Homebrew Antennas Here http://forums.netstumbler.com/showth...4&pagenumber=3
