Warwalking clothing

I have a CASIO e-125 pocket PC. Now, if I just had CF 802.11b card, I'd be set.

BUT: As we all know, there are no Hermes CF cards. Thus I need a CF-PCMCIA adapter, and a PCMCIA card.

Then of course, there is the Garmin eTrex. Which of course by itself is small. However, unlike a laptop in which the serial cable can be plugged in directly, the eTrex needs to be plugged into a SECOND CABLE thus resulting in something like 12 feet of cabling for 2 devices that will be right next to each other

Thus my question: What kind of jacket or bag do you guys use to carry all this in such a way as everything works but you don't look like a bionic man?

For warwalking through places that I cannot or wish not to drive I have a fanny pack (yes a fanny pack), with a two extra velcro on holsters, one for the iPAQ, and the other for the Garmin (mostly because of the cabling and bulky converters... exact details here:

Here's a GPS antenna cap. Its built for external antennas but one of little leadtek (SiRF based) units would probably fit inside. Not sure if I want to be collecting microwaves (~1.5 gHz) on top of my head though.

Whatever you wear, if it isn't waterproof, don't walk around fountains and pools, especially if you have 'so-called-friends' around... "I didn't know" doesn't make a 1200$USD WarWalking system come back to life...

As someone who has recovered a number of things from water, both electronic and otherwise, here is a method to follow should this ever happen to you:

1) Keep the gear wet. Preferably with the water it was immersed in. If that isn't possible, use tap water.

2) Remove it from the water bath only when you are ready for the next step. Remove any batteries at this time.

3) Immediately immerse in a bath of 70%-99% isopropol alcohol. Allow the alcohol to get everywhere the water is (was).

4) Air dry. A lab hood is great, otherwise a table fan will help.

5) When the gear is dry, replace the batteries with fresh.

6) Conduct smoke test. Be pleasently suprised when the gear comes back to life.

7) Send me a check for 10% of the gear just saved, for telling you all this.

Thanks Thorn, good FAQ material

Makes me wonder.. Should future fountains only be built with a built-in bath of isopropol alcohol?.. Maybe, when a stumbler joins the government?.. ^_~

Thorn,

As someone who's good at fouling stuff up, along the same lines of your comment, I actually made the motorola wall of shame, plus I proved just how long a damaged pager would last after the infamous submersion test...

I was out fly fishing one hot summer day, and was standing in chest deep water (I'm 6'3), and all of the sudden I heard this pathetic submerged garbled chime, coming from below.... At first I thought it was my cell phone, but felt down and found it was my pager... I quickly removed the battery and threw it in my chest pocket. When I got home several hours later, I unscrewed the back of the pager and put in on the broiling tray of my gas oven... NO! I didn't turn the burners on!! However, this oven has a pilot light that stays lit all the time and I kept it in there for 24 hours... Next day, I threw a new battery in and the pager worked fine.

I was so proud and impressed with this pager that I wrote motorola and shared this little "nugget of joy" and they replied that they posted my message on their "wall of shame" which was reserved for "idiot users"...

Well I supposed I deserved that as it was pretty stupid of me to forget it.

They probably wrote it down in the Solutions Manual at the same time under "Recoverying from Water Damage".

It activated the next morning, initialized, demanded a charging... After the charge, it worked for several hours, keyboard was wonky, but it worked... the next day it gave up the ghost.

oh well.

Don't ever drop your beeper (or other device) into a pitcher of beer. Cool at the time but -WOW- ....results may vary!

Unless you're pissed at your boss for paging you while you're in the "library"... I lose more pagers that way

There are just certain times when one does NOT want to be disturbed...
