Is there anybody stumbling in or near Birimngham, Alabama?

Yes...

I just bought my card the other day and have started war driving. Unfortunately I didn't do any research b4 i bought the card and I got a Linksys WPC11. It good for home use but not great for driving, since no external antenna. I found one AP so far, St. Vincents. Planning do a drive downtown to see what shows up.

Have you found anything?

I don't have a GPS, yet, but I've wandered around the city just to check out NetStumbler (even found a use for it at work with the power graph feature, seems AirPorts are a lot more powerful by default than Avaya APs).

Thus far, I've found about 68 APs with only about 15 using WEP. I drove by a co-worker's house and got him to enable it on his network when I told him how many other people in his neighborhood were using WiFi.

Around Huntville, there's a high concentration of APs in the richer parts of town east of the Parkway than in the middle/lower income neighborhoods I've stumbled thru. I was somewhat relieved to find no APs near any of the banks I passed, but I found a few downtown and a bunch thru Research Park. Linksys is by FAR the dominant brand. I'm hoping to borrow a GPS soon so I can upload my stumbling results.

Anyone else in the HSV/NorthAL area?

Well, I managed to scrounge up a Garmin GPS 12, so I retraced most of my original route and spent the day exploring the city. Actually went thru a few neighborhoods I'd never been in before. Have uploaded my results to both the Netstumber.com & Zhrodague map server databases, so I hope to see Huntsville show up soon.

So far, my results have been:
131 APs
25 WEP enabled
65 default SSIDs

still getting overwhelming Linksys representation

I would've had more, but after #131, the GPS started flaking out, and I didn't see much point in continuing after that.

Down by the Super Wal-Mart on South Parkway, I picked up a PEER contact with a SSID of "SMARTSIGHT". After a bit of research, I'm guessing it's a wireless video camera installation from these people: http://www.smartsightnetworks.com/.

After participating in 2 WWWD's, I've pretty much covered all of Huntsville, as well as most of Madison County (to include Hampton Cove, Madison, Hazel Green, Harvest, Meridianville and Ryland). Expanding outward, I've loosely covered as far east as Scottsboro, as far south as Albertville and as far west as parts of Decatur & Athens. I've made two trips to Nashville, and covered I-65 (which is pretty quiet with a pringles can) and US-31 (covering Franklin and parts of Columbia & Pulaski). I've also made a trip up US-431 to Fayetteville (much smaller town than I had expected), and from there, across the long, quiet stretch of Ardmore Hwy to Ardmore and then back down US-53 to Huntsville again.

My next big project will be to take US-31 south to Birmingham and then try to find US-231 to make the trip back in order to hit all the little towns in between like Gardendale, Cullman, Hartselle, etc.

Well, took my long stroll down to B'ham this weekend and wished more than ever that I had an omni. Anyway, we drove to Birmingham the slow way in an effort to hit a bunch of those little towns like Arab, Cleveland, and a few that went by so quickly, I have no memory of.

Entering Birmingham thru US79S, we went thru Tarrant and picked up a few there in the industrial section, then basically just drove thru downtown, a bit thru UAB & the college apartment area, then back into downtown and over to Homewood (lots of rich neighborhoods, lots of APs). Coming out of Homewood, we grabbed US31N and picked up about 20 Cisco APs from St. Vincent's Hospital and headed back to Huntsville thru Fultondale, Gardendale, Warrior, Cullman, Hanceville, Hartselle, Priceville and the edge of Athens.

All told, I only ended up with about 283 APs for the trip, but that's with a directional pringles cantenna and a vague knowledge of Birmingham. I probably would've gotten higher numbers just by unplugging the pigtail and using the Avaya's antenna. Someone who lives there should be able to pick up a couple of thousand APs in just a couple of days stumbling. But at least now B'ham is on the map in a serious way, rather than just the few specs that were there before.

Sup DaClyde,

Just started Wardriving this past week. I'm your neighbor to the west in Florence. Don't have an external antenna yet, just my laptop and a WPC54G Linksys card with my Garmin Legend GPS. Found almost 50 APs arouond the Shoals area. Just uploaded most of them to Wifi maps.

What kind of setup are you using? Still kinda green to the scene, and would like some advice from a ripe old veteran!!

Awesome to have someone else in North Al join the hunt! If you've seen the maps, you'll see my trip to Brownsville, TN from a few months ago...string of AP's from Huntsville to western TN. I really wanted to return to the Shoals area after finding so many there just driving along 72.

I'm using a Thinkpad R32 with an Avaya Silver card, NetStumbler v0.3 and either a Pringles can or a 5dbi mag mount antenna from fab corp and a Deluo USB GPS. When I passed thru Florence, I was just using the Pringles can, didn't have the mag mount, yet.

Cool..heh thought about getting one of the Orinoco Gold with external antenna plug and using one of those 5-8db antennas to see what else I could pick up. I uploaded about 20 or so to the map last night..they are showing on there today. Let me know if your ever headed thru this way. We should try and meet up sometimes.

It's been a few weeks since I've been stumbling. Think I'm probably going to head to Tupelo, MS sometimes today. Probably do a little stumbling down that way. What kinda setup you using? Think I'm pretty much using the standard stumbler special. The Orinoco Gold, Pigtail, and 5db Mag Mount antenna. Picked up about 100 or so around the Shoals Area. Was pretty impressed. Didn't think the technology was that well deployed in this area yet. Huntsville's a freaking Wireless Fest. Can't go 10 feet without finding a 2 or 3. LOL

Would you two want to do some collaboration for the upcoming World Wide Wardrive? Last year, it was just me representing the North Alabama area, but it would be great to have have more detailed data from Cullman and the Shoals area. I'll probably be talking to the Hsv2600 group to see if they're interested in helping out since some of them have gotten into wardriving in the last 6 months or so.

I'm hoping to be able to post some maps on a site, but that all depends on whether or not I can get DeLorme Street Atlas to cooperate.
