Randomized MAC
Your guess is likely correct. There are a number of stumbling tools which will randomize the MAC, at least on startup:
http://www.dachb0den.com/projects/dstumbler.html I haven't seen any that randomly change during runtime, except perhaps some of the odd Linux shell script scanning routines still floating around? |

Wrigley Building
I agree- Michigan avenue in front of the Wrigley Building (near 401 N. Michigan) is absolutely flooded... I counted 18 networks at 9PM on a Friday night with MiniStumbler
I had been there just 3 months ago with Netstumbler and only found 6. What are you using for an audible notification of data reception? Just 'snoop -a' on a tadpole? :-) |

For audio notification i'm using kismet with a ^G echoed into a textfile and:
# Path to sound player soundplay=/bin/cat ... # New network found sound_new=beep.txt ... # Network traffic sound sound_traffic=wav/beep.txt in the config. (keep in mind the laptop has poor sound support on OpenBSD, so i cut down on proccessor/did a shortcut with this) i accidentally forgot to put headphones in during one session. the periodic to frantic beeping earned more than a couple worried stares as i walked down the street. That and I generally run a copy of ethereal to capture packets. Netstumbler is fine, if you have the right card, but this is on a D-Link 650 and OpenBSD, so it's not an ideal situation for the software really. |

Not a bad idea with getting together...it'd be a good chance to check out how others are doing it.
Also, theres the 2621's (2600's, but generally smarter people plus drinks/food) first friday of every month at Mickeys Grill & Pub at 2831 N. Broadway across from Borders/Staples. Not great for wardriving, but good god do they have a nice selection of whiskey... Either way, it's a good break from the kids that usually inhabit the regular 2600 crowd. |

Chicago 2621
I hope to see a few people from here at 2621 this Friday.
True, you don't see any wireless networks while hanging out at Mickeys... I did run across some odd RF video signals of a text display last month, but we figure it to be nothing more leakage from RCN cable TV :-) Perhaps somebody can volunteer to bring in a Linux laptop setup in 'IBSS emulation mode' as a test target? http://people.ssh.com/jkm/Prism2/ If nothing else, you can park in front of Screenz and freak out all the kiddies at 2600... |

wow all war drivers must be very disturbed people
Konopka admitted he "re-keyed" a CTA storage area where he kept cyanide and other chemicals, authorities said. He also kept a stolen laptop computer that he used for "war driving," accessing networks without permission using a wireless modem, the FBI said. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-0203120291mar12.story?coll=chi%2Dnews%2Dhed |

Chicago Red Line - Psychos
Gein..Dahmer...all these serial killer types always comin down from wisconsin to chicago. Had it been around at the time, i'm sure Dahmer would have b33n a l33t w1rl3zz haxx0r.
Altho, i have to admit, it'd be pretty interesting having a canister full of cyanide laying around. I suppose i would have chosen someplace else than the steam tunnels tho. |
