Don't laugh. Iowa has internet too. I'm trying to setup a 802.11b backbone between Ames and Boone. I know the University (ISU) has lots of AP's. Has anyone done any war driving around here? I'm just getting my rig setup. I'll post back soon w/ results.

Hello,

Very new to this (about a day) ... any hints on how to use the map, or find out if my wireless LAN is on this list other than page through about a billion pages looking for my AP MAC address? Also, ever heard of netstumbler working on a Netgear or 3COM card?

As far as the netgear card goes just try a seach on Netgear....
but I think it's a Prism 2 chipset card and won't work w/ Netstumbler. You should try this guys software http://www.bretmounet.com/ApSniff/

I think you can do a database query to look for your MAC.

Are you in the Ames area?

I use stumbler (on a laptop) I would like to mini stuble, but I don't have a PC card sleeve for my iPaq yet (read, I'm poor).

Have you found any places in DSM or thereabouts that have connectors & stuff. I need an N coupler, but don't want to pay 10 bucks shipping on a 5 buck part.

Hmmm .. I have a co-worker who uses an iPaq wirelessly and cellular-wise, tell me exactly what an 'N' - connector is and I'll see if I can get you one and send to you on the cheap.

So have you built your Pringles-can antennae yet? Apparently they were all the rage at Networld-Interop+ .. I'm beginning to think that I need to start watching our parking lot for strangers trying to hack our wireless network. We're as secure as we can be, but 802.11b is not a terribly safe base to work from .

N is the connector used on external anntena cable connections.

I haven't build one out of a pringles can, but...
I've made a couple out of old coffe cans. (which, btw, work much better) Here is a great link http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html He compares all the different anntenas.

I replaced the dumb rubber anntena on my Linksys AP at home with my coffee can. I just point the can straight up, since I don't know where in the house I'll be. I still double my signal strenght no matter where I am.

I'm in Ames. I've got a laptop, a card, AP and netstumbler, but haven't realy done any wardriving. My lack of a GPS is holding me back. (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it). I'm just pleased to see someone else from Iowa in here. I wasn't sure if one in Iowa used 802.11b.

Any ways, I bet you get a lot of hits downtown by the four seasons.

Go near the old Norand site at CR as they have tones of AP's as this is a development part of the New Intermec company

Sorry Chris_Schear, I just drove from:
Boone to Ames on 30
Ames to DSM on 35
and up and down SE 14 th St.

Nothing, absolutely nothing.

But I didn't have an external anteena.

Equipment:
iPAQ 3630
Orinoco Silver (in the PC card expantion sleeve)
MiniStumbler

The only thing I've found was a couple at Sauer-Danfoss up in Ames. SSID sauer-d

I utilized a Compaq WL110 and drove from Downtown DSM to my home in West Des Moines, approximately 8 miles. I located 26 different APs. Upon taking I-35 North, the curve from the West Side, from the 235/80 cross section to 86th Street (The Carmike Theater exit) - I located 17 different APs around the associated business parks. All in all, I've found dozens and dozens without hardly getting off the interstate, almost all without WEP.

I wouldn't have even bothered to of checked SE 14, no one in Des Moines actually ventures towards the South Side. It's the part of the city the decent folk don't talk about. I'd be surprised if any of the residence actually own color TVs, let alone, wireless access points.
