AP's in Holland

Lo,

Not in the North of Holland - but in Lelystad ... Find me if u can :P

I've tried my best to make it difficult to get in, WEP, no SSID, MAC filtering, small chickens patrolling the street...

Amsterdam....

Woooaaahh!!

Just looked at the maps - can't believe how many there are in Amsterdam... now if only they were all the way along my route to work... .... at least I'd be able to get traffic reports from trafficnet.nl ... mind you it's almost guarenteed that there will be traffic jams all the way

Gonna try to map from my place to the office tomorrow...

I don't have an antenna, so don't expect much..

I also don't have Mappoint 2002, but if I get anything I can send the data to add to your maps...

Monitoring... more

I did as I said I would and bungged the laptop on the back seat and drove into work. What did surprise me was how far my own AP was broadcasting.... it needs to be moved!

There was nothing else until I got to Amsterdam..

Even WITHOUT an antenna I picked up 15 APs... I couldn't actually believe the number of times I heard my laptop bleep as I drove in.

My route is via Demon Zuid .. almost immediately I passes the BP petrol station I got my first, around he corner and another... then another ... then another... my laptop was singing...

Some had WEP enabled but the majority did not...

I found a "monitoring" at the weteringcircuit..

ScaredyCat

I also forgot that I don't have gps yet - DOH!

I'm wondering to myself if the 'monitoring' APs in Amsterdam are anything to do with all the cameras around the areas that have been mentioned as having APs labelled this way. Weteringcircuit is right next to Vijzelgracht, which has a bunch of cameras on the corners of buildings. I haven't quite figured out their use yet, but it's something to do with black reflective circles attached the walls of shops and houses. Does anyone notice this, or is it just me?

Updated

Just updated the Dutch site
now have Utrecht, lelystad (well i drove through it as it was hard to understand the layout of the roads.
almere(god this place is like some thing from edward thinggy hands)

I have decided i need to get an in car nav system as trying to stumble the area without having the full map and a trace showing is hard as i kept on ending up on the same roads.

I cant get NS and MP2002 to work together. on a 98 machine with GPS. it wont share the same port for the GPS

Lightbulb The Monitoring network in A'dam

Hi,
Did some stumbling yesterday on my bicycle and happened to run into Boris from www.hubhop.com. He told me that the "monitoring" networks found all over downtown are run by the City of Amsterdam. They have lasers set-up all around the zone where the new metro line will be build, to track possible movements of the ancient buildings. They use the network to relay the laser data back to the engineering dept. All WEP enabled.

PS: more info can be found at http://www.noordzuidlijn.amsterdam.nl/
Click on "Techniek" and then "Monitoring"

Stumblers in Netherlands and Belgium?

Looking for pointers, advice (legal or otherwise) and any "must stumble" places in Holland and Belgium. I'll be making a loop from Amsterdam through Belgium, up the coast and back up to Amsterdam.

European R/F Standards

An important consideration is the hardware you are planning to use. Each country in Europe has it's own regulatory body for 2.4GHz wireless, and none of them use the same standard. This means that an 802.11x radio might not be able to even detect these systems, let alone connect. If, however, you have a European spec card or can reburn it's firmware to European spec, you should not have any difficulty.

Thanks, I always forget about that. As for firmware, are the drivers for orinoco cards available by region or by language?
