Getting started in Cincinnati
I'm going to try getting a stumbling rig up and running around the University of Cincinnati and Clifton residential area. I'm really new to the concept, and I've got a pretty packed schedule, so I don't know how much I'll be able to contribute to mapping, but I'm going to give it a shot when I get my shit together.
Couple of questions for you... I have a Handspring Visor, and I know that they make an 802.11b module for it, but I've been unsuccessful at locating a MiniStumbler version for PalmOS. Is this still in the works, or am I just missing where to find it? For a walkabout mobile rig, would I just be better off with a laptop instead of trying to find / port M'Stumbler to the Visor? I'm going for maximum concealability, rather than maximum range (on the logic that I can find an AP with a high power yagi, but Cincinnati cops would flip out if they saw me pointing it, but I can get in close enough to pull a signal if I'm low key and concealed.) The Visor 802.11b firmware update for PalmOS 4.0 has updated a lot of shit that I understand would be necessary for stumbling AP's: DHCP, and auto recognition of AP signals (rather than the old version which required manual AP information entry). Thanx in advance, l0ckd0wn |

I've already done downtown Cincinnati and around the perimeter of UC. There's so much signal in the air that I'm suprised that cooked pigeons weren't falling out of the air...
As far as I know, there isn't any software for the Palm, so you'd be better off tossing a notebook into a backpack and strolling around. You could even be playing MP3s on it with Netstumbler beeping over the top of the tunes! |

The eastern/southeastern part of town is the one area I've not covered real well. Indian Hill doesn't have much roadway to cover, but the area near Madeira should have a few. Hyde Park is untouched, as are the Anderson and Loveland areas.
If the maps at the ohiowardriving site ever get updated, you'll get a pretty good idea of what I've hit. |

In a month, I'm back home in boring Toledo, OH, and will have much more free time than when I did at school. I'm looking for anyone and everyone that is in the area that wants to sit around and talk about netstumblering, but even better, I want some people that really want to be active in the area. Anyone nearby is encouraged to contact me, I plan to have a big summer of fun.

Cincinnati suburbs
Spanner,
I've almost got my whole rig put together (I'm waiting on a GPS right now, should be this week/early next.) But just out of curiousity I did a sweep of Hyde Park/O'Bryonville and picked up over 20 AP's from Linwood, up Madison to Woodburne Ave. (and this is without an external antenna.) I'm still pretty new to this, so I'm just getting a feel for it, but once I have the full hang of things I'll start uploading points. We might be taking a drive this weekend, if the GPS comes in tomorrow (crossing fingers...) If you want in on the drive, (and future ones) when we go, leave me a message and we can set up to meet. (If you know where Riddle Rd. Market is, it's a good meeting place. Awesome pizzas, and a cooler full of Jones Soda) L8R, l0ckd0wn |

Waiting (impatiently) for parts
I've been running Ministumbler on my way to and from work most every day for a week now, and keep coming up with new routes home, and new AP's most routes. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for my GPS, and I just got an email saying they were backordered on the serial cable. So now I've got to track down what the hell is going on with the order for the GPS, cancel the serial cable order and find someone with them in stock, and try and find somewhere around here that has the antenna parts I need. (Radio Shack on short Vine has nothing.) I've got the PVC, allthread, washers, tubing, caps, and nuts. I need the N-connector, antenna cable, and Lucent centerpin connector to build the connection.
It's been a hellacious week in dealing with my regular job, other people's computer problems, my wife's crappy design client right now, and not having these parts is just the capper for the weekend. I'm hitting Party Source after work today and picking up some a bottle of scotch and some stout. Side note: Hyde Park has lots of businesses running WiFi nets without WEP. Is this the sorry state of security understanding in today's businesses? Sorry for ranting, l0ckd0wn |

So you're running ministumbler? I thought you were a Palm person. What type of GPS unit are you looking at, my pereference is Garmin. You might want to drive by BassPro on 275, their prices are not to bad, and with their card, you get a rebate on any thing you buy. Also you might try TV Nav.com his prices are not bad, and I haven't had problems with him.
For RadioShack give the one on Glenway a call, they seem to have most things, or can get them for you. It's a bit of a drive, but you will find some interesting sites. Yes, only seems like at best, a third of what I'm finding is using WEP, but then again, if you want to you can break wep, or so I hear. And with the price of our toys, I'm not sure that many 15 ~ 16 years old, will chose to spend their money that way. Grey |

I ended up giving the Handspring Visor to my wife to organize all of the crap she keeps on post-its and scrap paper. It just didn't have the capacity to do what I was looking for. For her purposes, it works great, though. I was going to go with a laptop, but I started considering the concealability factor, and picked up an iPAQ on the cheap at overstock.com, and the PCMCIA sleeve and ORiNOCO Gold on Ebay for about half the store price. Haven't had any problems with any of it. What type of GPS unit are you looking at, my pereference is Garmin. I've got an eTrex Legend on order. Just need to track it down. It's a bit of a drive, but you will find some interesting sites. The Radio Shack on Glenway is right by my father in law's house, and I'm out that way every weekend anyhow. It's not that much of a drive for me at all. I'll check it out. Yes, only seems like at best, a third of what I'm finding is using WEP, but then again, if you want to you can break wep, or so I hear. And with the price of our toys, I'm not sure that many 15 ~ 16 years old, will chose to spend their money that way. A lot of what I'm finding up around Clifton, especially the UC campus area (outside of NoWireUC's network) is running WEP. I don't know if it's just a more tech-savvy crowd around the college (you wouldn't guess it based on the dumbasses I live next to...) or a higher propensity to assume "it won't happen to me" in the suburbs like Hyde Park. Oh well. |

You any good with a soldering iron? If so you might want to give pFranc a look and also Gomadic a look. The cable will attach to the eTrex, and the right plug will attach to the iPaq.
I love my little e-map it last all day on a set of batteries, charge it back up when I get home. With the iPaq, if you stand it up, I seem to get really great range. Biggest problem I've run into, is knowing where I've been. On streets with AP it's not a real problem, but where they aren't it can be a problem. Grey |
