You any good with a soldering iron?

Only if I want to ruin something. I'll look around for the prebuilt cable, but thanx for the suggestions.

I love my little e-map it last all day on a set of batteries, charge it back up when I get home.

With the iPaq, if you stand it up, I seem to get really great range.

I ususally just keep mine in my shirt pocket. Keeps it above the level of the dash/body panelling, and I pick up a ton of APs.

Biggest problem I've run into, is knowing where I've been.
On streets with AP it's not a real problem, but where they aren't it can be a problem.

I've not gone out on any serious drives yet, so it's just a matter of a few streets difference on my way home from work. When I go out for the serious mapping runs, I'm bringing my Nav officer and R.I.O., and we'll have a distinct set route plan on paper maps, a single omni-dir high gain, and two directionals running. We should end up being able to cover max territory in minimal time with few re-runs of streets.

Hey l0ckd0wn,

when you go to and from work are you going dowtown? I just started stumbling around here recently myself. On about every drive I take I get about an 85% rate of non wep enabled hits. I was amazed.

I was planning on driving around downtown soon and doing a scan. I just received my 5dbi magmount from fab-corp with the pigtail, but the pigtail had a piece broken on it so I am waiting to here something back on a replacement.

I am using a ipaq 3650 w/pcmcia adapter and the Orinoco gold card. Still looking for more software for it, but it it one sweet device. I see you said you keep your unit in your pocket. I keep mine in the carying case and I put the inside door handle through the beltloop holder right next to the driver windows, its above the metal and I can get at it quickly (may or may not be an option for you).

Let me know how your stumbling goes. We may have to compare notes sometime. I am now hunting down a gps unit I can use on the iipaq and transfer to my laptop in case I want to use it in the stumble adventures. I may have missed it but what unit did you order?

I'm based off the SW side of campus. I haven't tried downtown yet, but my rent's due so I'll be headed that way early next week. I'll see what I can find down there.

I was planning on driving around downtown soon and doing a scan.

We'll have to collaborate on areas, so we're not re-inventing the wheel and overlapping each other. No sense in wasting good driving time.

I bought mine as a refurb. No case, no manuals, no nothing. Just the unit and a stylus. So shirt pocket is about the best I can do.

I ordered a Garmin eTrex Legend.

Do you know where the Riddle Road Market is in Clifton? They've got some pretty good food, and I think it would make a decent meeting place for campus area stumblers.

I had to run to Staples to get a screen protector today so I decided to hit the one Downtown. I had a ton of hits w/about 1/2 wep. This was just the plain ipaq as I have not heard back from fab-corp on my borken pigtail. I can only imagine how many hits I would have gotten then seeing how a lot of the access points are many stories about the street.

I do not know where Riddle Road Market is in Clifton but I definately remember where Clfiton is from many moons ago.

I'll have to check into the Garamin unit. I guess about any of them will work with a laptop too.

Paths,
If you know the campus area at all, Riddle Road Market is at the corner of Riddle and Marshall. Riddle is just off the corner of Clifton and M.L. King, about 1/3 of a mile down from the Group Health Associates building.
Anyone in the Clifton/Cinti area have a recommendation on what a good day and time to meet and trade notes would be? My schedule is pretty forgiving, and the only time I'm not available is M-F, from 5am-5pm when I'm working. I'd really like to try and get some of the other Cinti stumblers together.

Lightbulb Cincinnati get together

So if we're going to have a get together, what are we thinking about doing?

Will it just be an exchange of ideas? Get to look at each others equipment? Or do you want to do some Stumbling? Or all of the above?

Just looking at the time you have free, it seems to me that Saturday morning might be a good time. Say Saturday morning June the 8 at 10:00am? That gives us a chance to get the rest of the equipment in, and maybe find another Cincinnati / Northern Ky Stumbler. I'm thinking Saturday morning gives us a chance to meet and talk about things, and if anyone wants to afterward, go stumbling.

Anyone aware of Cincinnati location that offers free 802.11b access? It would be nice to have access to the web at the meeting. As I recall parking can be a real pain on Riddle Road.

Cinti Hotspots

The Cincinnatian, The Crown Plaza, and The Omni Netherlands, all have open access downtown. Check out http://www.80211hotspots.com/usa/2000242/ for more info on them.
I'm all up for a Saturday morning meeting, but the 8th/9th of June, I've got other obligations.
I finally got the GPS in today, and I'm picking up the cable this week, so I'll be good to go in two weeks. (Building 'tennas this week/weekend)
Other than the 8th/9th of June, what's good for everyone else?

Saturday mornings are the best for me too. We just need a date and time that works for most people.

l0ckd0wn..

You building Pringle 'tennas??? I managed to buy the chips but never seem to get motivated enough to build the unit. I usually wind up throwing the darned can away and buying another. haha

I started Searching for a gps but there are to many choices. I really would like to get the Garmin with 24 meg onboard but that gets to pricey just for having fun. Do you know how big of a area you can load into 8 meg on the Legend unit?

How does Saturday the 15 of June work?

You should be able to load all of Cincinnati within the 275 boundery and a little beyond in 8 MB at a minium. It depends on the map that you use, and the amount of info in it.

Saturday the 15th of June works for me just fine. I'll make sure I don't have to work that morning. (Real job is virology. Biological cultures and viruses don't seem to appreciate the fact that there's other things I'd like to do with my weekends.)

paths...

I was considering the pringles route, and opted for a little more permanence in the design. Home Depot instead of Kroger for the housing: I'm building 'em in PVC. They should be done by this weekend for a trial run. Another pal of mine (not registered here yet, I'm still working on convincing him) just got an 8dbi flat panel omni, so we're working on amassing the collection right now...

Exclamation Ohio War Driving

Hi Gents!!

I run a web site that deals exclusively with Ohio War Driving.

The site is currently located at:

http://www.geocities.com/ohiowardriving.

I am moving it to http://www.ohiowardriving.com in the next couple of weeks.

I am most interested in any Cinci stumbling information you may have. I would love to post it on my site.

I could also use a Cinci moderator/point of contact for my site, if anyone is interested in volunteering.

I am also looking for volunteers to help me keep the site updated, etc.

Contact me if you are interested, or just have questions.

l0ckd0wn;

Care to talk about just what you are building? Can't help but notice that you talk about them in the plural, are you building different versions, or a buch all the same?

Are you building the uk design one?

Have you seen this DIY Helical Directional Antenna Prototype

Here is even a better page, I think I might even like one of these, Helical Directional Antenna Like to have one of them on the roof. Say with a USB Orinoco card mounted with it.

Now here is asimple mobile antaenna

OhioWarDriving;

Any chance of you putting in an appearance in our little get-together, on June 15, 2002? The more the better. We're not all that far from where you are.
