unfortunately I no longer live in Ottawa. I'm now in Toronto, but I may stumble a bit in mid-May back in Ottawa and I'll let you know what I find. No GPS yet, though.

I imagine if you drove down albert or slater or kent or something you'd find a lot of APs.

All of the down-town block is pretty heavy with APs.
I have collected a list of 130+ so far ..

I've also collected a list of completely open residential APs (ie. free internet access, etc)

Funny how Linksys seems to be the most common OPEN AP.

I'm in Ottawa! A friend and I recently got started. We've built a directional out of PVC + wire and are using prism2 on linux. We've found a couple APs but were having trouble getting anything useful from them. A contact in Ottawa to talk to and trade tips with would be mint. ICQ anyone?

I'm here in Ottawa... Don't use ICQ (yet) tho. I'd post here, so all the newbies can make use of our info as well.

Cool. Nice to know there are other geeks in my town doing this. Have any favorite spots you're willing to share?

Well downtown is pretty good for density, but they're mostly corporate, and therefore at least slightly secured.

What you really want to do for fun is drive through a place like Barrhaven and pick up all the hi tech wannabes who've got their own WLAN. Most of 'em are totally unsecured, as are the machines behind them.

Good idea. I grew up in Barrhaven, and live not too far from there now. We'll give it a whirl next time we go out.

Wink Lots of time!

I suppose you Ottawa people have more time on your hands now that you're out of the playoffs!

Sorry, couldn't help myself...

APs in Stittsville or Nepean?

Are there any open (public) Access Points anywhere in Nepean? I'll be visiting Ottawa (in the Moodie / Richmond area of Nepean) in August... just wondering if there's any places to connect.

I guess I'm really stretching with Stittsville... maybe I'll switch by the Corel Centre and answer your question. :-)

Toronto Stumblers?

Hi, I just did my first stumbling today! Discovered around a dozen along Steeles, and more than a dozen in a short drive around Downtown(one of the AP is located 9th floor up!). And only 20% are WEPed... and I stopped by one of them and checked cnn.com :P

Equipment used: cheap AMD-300 laptop, Orinoco Gold, in a silver Honda Oddessy

I am going to grab some colorful chalks tommorow to start warchalking like mad. It's just too fun!

Scarborough, Ontario

9th floor

Let me guess, the 9th floor AP you're talking about was in the Yonge/Bloor area?

Been there, done that, got the GPS maps...

stumbling

well i was stumbling around yonge & eglinton and i got a AP from the 27th & 16th floors of a building, both were WEP enabled so no use to me but i was surprised i could get a signal from so high up. i used to work in the building and the companies named the AP's their company name, tisk....tisk....tisk
must say yonge is a smorgesborge of AP's mostly unWEP'ed i walked from bloor to front and i was actually able to get a IP from the dhcp server for most of them even got "pretty" good bandwith from more than a couple
surfin without wires who woulda thunk it????
