Romania
Okay, here's a long-shot...
I'm going to Romania in the near future (we're adopting a little girl). I'm considering taking my laptop/wireless setup in order to keep in touch with family from home. Does anyone know the availability of wireless in Romania? What about compatability issues? I'm hoping to find a hotel over there with wireless or broadband connectivity for their customers. I'm simply hoping someone here has some knowledge/experience in Romania... Thanks!

Wow, I sure am late on this one...
Anywho, I too am going to Romania shortly for a month as part of my uni-course (a nice, free holiday, I can't complain ). So I just wondered if you found anything?I don't know whether I'm taking my laptop, I was going to so I could use a digital camera but insurance issues made me change my mind. But... I would consider taking it if the stumbling is good. Hope your time out there was good, I'm looking forward to mine.

If my memory serves me correctly, Romania is still a bit back in
the Tech. stoneages, but is catching up fast. You should be able to find at least 1 Wireless network hook-up, but don't count on it. Your best bet is in the Touristy kinds of places in the BIG cities.

Plans have changed
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately our plans have changed. We were trying to adopt a little girl from Romania, but those plans have fallen through.
We've now identified a cute little girl from Korea and with luck and God's blessing she'll be home with us by Christmas! No trip needed for Korean adoptions either... they'll escort her to the States. Wish us luck!

Romanian Adoption
If you review this thread you'll see that we had started an adoption of a little girl in Romania, but it fell through due to politics.
Late last year ('04) we got a letter from the State Dep't on this issue. Even though there's a moritorium on adoptions from Romania, they are trying to resolve open cases on about 2000-3000 children. There are adoption packages from around the world that are in place, and in limbo. Apparently one of these parents contact GWB, and he has taken a personal interest in trying to get these 2000-3000 adoptions completed. Well, we're going to see if we can bring her home! Since the time of the original adoption attempt we've received more information. She's in one of the best orphanages in Romania. If you go to that home page you will actually see her picture. She's in the top photo, in the red jumper. Total luck that she was in that picture! Anyway, turns out I might be going to Romania after all. If I do, then I'll be dragging my beat up old lappy, and needing updated hotspot info. Keep us and her in your prayers please! ![]()

I really do wish you all the best with this. I was in Romania for about 5 weeks last year and had a month visit the year before that. Hoopefully I'll be spending at least 6 weeks there this year and anything up to a year in the near future.
I guess, what I'm trying to say with this is that Romania is one of my favourite places. I really love the country and the people. Hopefully this will all work out well for you. Good luck.

Romania adoption
I truely hope you were able to adopt that adorable little girl! I visit Romania about 3-4 months per year, I have completly fallen in love with it. My wife was born there, that is the connection. The people are warm and wonderful, and food great, the wine delicious (and CHEAP!). The amount of orphans breaks my heart, it really does. It makes me weep every time I go, and I am so glad that you might be able to adopt from Romania, my own adopted home. Keep up posted....

Romania adoption
We are going to Romania for 12 days in April and found the thread searching for wifi. Wondering about your Korean adoption. We have a beautiful Korean grandaughter now 7 yrs old and hope if you adopt she will be as smart and lovable as ours.
For what it is worth, we spend two months a year in Europe on various types of trips including car rental and camping, river cruises, Rick Steves tours and independent tours and always take our laptop. It was inexpensive to insure and it lets us download, edit, and review digipics. We have built in wifi but have not found a convenient hotspot (we don't stay in international hotels with mostly tourists). Using internet cafes is very convenient and inexpensive. In the Ukraine and Russia last year it was less than $2.00 per hour to use their computers and I assume Romania will be similar. Will continue to look for hotspots. |

Unfortunately our Romanian adoption is not going to happen. After 3 years, and a letter from the State Dep't asking if we wanted to go through with the adoption, we found out that she's ALREADY BEEN ADOPTED! I can't tell you how painful this whole process was. We just pray she's with a good family. Anyway, thanks again for the feedback. P.S. Here's a pic of our little girl:
