Anyone willing to share their netstumbler logs with or without GPS? I am working on some web software that dynamically maps APs and allows zooming, lots of information on each AP and extensive database searching by zipcode and MAC address.

Any help, especially with data I can test with, will be appriciated.

4577 APs across the US with GPS, and around 500 APs without... comes out to be a 30MB NS1 uncompressed file.

Is anyone in the Richmond area?

I just started looking into this whole thing this week. At this point I'm using an iBook with Macstumbler with just the Airport card. I also have a Dell laptop, but not enough money to get a card for it. Ack.

I'm real new to this, just started tonight in Newport News. Found about a dozen APs, only 1 of which had WEP on. I'm a little confused about a lot of this, if anyone wants to help me out I'd appreciate it. Two of us have been documenting Wireless Networks in the Northern VA, D.C. area for about two weeks now. We've documented over 1000 networks so far and are still stumblin'.

Slacker has been working on a really schweet perl script for us that allows us to upload exported summaries to his web server, parse them and spit out all kinds of handy info. For instance, the Perl script keeps a count of all AP's with a default SSID and no WEP enabled.

It also rips the txt into a csv that can be imported into MapPoint.

Here is one output page that is maintained in real time, so when we upload to it, it updates all fields:

You can see some HTML maps and some of my ramblings on wi-fi at http://mcwresearch.com. All of the maps are void of any identifying information, as our intent is to document and analyze only.

Oh, and if any moderators/admins read this, there is a glitch on the Other Stumblers forum. For some reason it says that most of the people posting in it are on my ignore list, yet I have no one in my ignore list. I noticed it on someone else's login as well.

Yeah that is a bug that we have noticed...

I've seen "radiofreedoug" up around I-495 and I-66. I was running MacStumbler on my iBook at the time, so I have no lat/long. Yet.

I'm waiting on my mag-mount omni to get here, then I'll try again with my Dell/Orinoco/GPS setup.

BTW, if you want I can send you what I find among my daily commute from the Baltimore area to Reston

Yup, weekdays I do the drive. Doesn't take me much longer than it did from Manassas, to where I have to go.

Once I get the omni, I'll do another drive. Then I'll send results as often as you can stand 'em

I'd rather not share our stumbled files for one reason:

I don't know you personally, therefore your intentions are unknown. We are gathering this info for analytical reasons only. *Dubious* or otherwise casually-prinipled individuals could use the information we've gathered for illegal activities. tsk tsk.

However, we are keeping our maps up-to-date and even though they do not show you any usefull information, you can judge by our maps what areas will be most fruitful to your Sunday drives. For example, two hours spent in the Arlington area will produce over 300 networks. The same goes for the D.C. area, west of the Capitol.

We have a "big map" that shows the entire area we've covered, plus we've broken down several *session* maps of specific area's we've covered.

Looking at your map at http://stumble.getcis.com, don't you have the number and percentage of the AP's for each type-secured and unsecured-reversed? Or is DC finally wising up with 2/3 of the Access Points secured?

Yes, DC must be gettin' smart. My guess is its the result of a few things:

1. September 11
2. Increased public awareness and knowledge of wireless and its implications
3. Folks in D.C. are trying to prove to the rest of the world what they've been saying all along; "We're smarter than you."
