How may I advise a person who I believe has an open access point? I don't know where (or who) the owner is, but I wish to tell him about his network vulnerabilities. How do I advise him?

You don't. It's got the potential for getting you in deep legal problems.

Even if you're not thinking of a business, read this: http://forums.netstumbler.com/showthread.php?t=10985 A lot of the particulars apply even if you're just trying to be a good samaritan.

So I'll let whoever it is find their vulnerabilities on their own..........That is the best solution?

I need to get a car hook up for my laptop

I don't know about using wireless business ap's, but VA Beach is FULL of unprotected ap's. I live right down by the beach and run the VA Beach area mostly. Between VA Beach and a few runs I've made to South Carolina I've logged about 627 AP's, most in VA Beach.

Corrective Action

Let me clarify my position on stumbling. The unauthorized use of any access point, without the express consent of that access points owner is an illegal act and will make you subject to punitive action. The identification and documentation of an existing access point without actual connection is NOT an illegal act. This identification and documentation is the purview of the stumbler. This is what stumblers do, look but don't touch. Unless you want legal troubles, I suggest this is all you do as well.

Try posting in the right thread, and you'll get better results. Merged.

Anybody in the D.C. area? I've got a bunch from 495/95. Funny how the percentage of encrypted APs hasn't changed much in the last few years. At least from my cursory review.
