Linksys 5ghz AP released! 802.11a
upon going to linksys' website to get some drivers for a usb nic & to check for upgraded firmware for my 4pt cable router, right there on the front page ( www.linksys.com ) they show off the pretty new 5ghz wap.
brief overview: Interoperable with other 802.11a wireless equipment Up to 72Mbps turbo mode (with Linksys WPC54 only Operation in the uncrowded 5 GHz band this info can be found @ http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=22&prid=428 as well as links to the product sheet and all that good stuff. you do, however, have to have thier card to use it for the mad 72mbs turbo mode (linksys only) -152bit wep. hmmm... proprietary? -only 8 chans (5 in japan) I have no idea and it didnt say if it was backwards compatible with 802.11b, but i'm guessing it doesnt. |

Old News
I did some research into this quite a while back as I was on the linksys website on a regular basis.
To the best that I can recall it is not backwards compatible. It is a very good idea because you would not have as much interference, but they will not be too compatible until more people adopt this technology. Aside from that, it is ungodly expensive in comparison to the other cards and APs that are out there. |
