AUGUST SPEAKERS at http://www.sgvrc.org
By: K6CEO

Yes, our cup runeth over for the August meeting as we have two speakers scheduled. Our visiting speaker will be Frank Keeney, KG6JVE, who will speak on Wireless Networking. Frank has been a guest on local talk radio, and has recently been interviewed by a local television station, http://www.pasadena.net/media/

Frank Keeney is a computer and network security consultant for Pasadena Networks, LLC, http://www.pasadena.net He has worked in the field of computer networking for almost 12 years. Some of his recent projects include a secure wireless network for the VirginMega stores. He became interested in Ham Radio when he started to work with wireless computer networks. Frank has found his affiliation with ham radio operators has helped him become more proficient in his work with wireless computer networks, and, it's been a fun hobby as well.

Frank said he would be covering IEEE-802.11b wireless computer networks; the equipment needed, how they work, how to setup, antennas, transmission range and security issues. And, he will have sample equipment for everyone to see.

You might ask who needs a wireless computer network? Well, if you have more than one computer in your home (I have three, with a fourth due any day, Ed.) you are a candidate for a home wireless network. Do you have a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the Net, plus several computers at home or in your office? If so, it is very easy to provide a shared, wide-band connection for each machine to the Net, via your own wireless network. It is also easy to share the printers, scanners and other peripherals that are attached to one machine. This can cut your cost of computer ownership significantly, especially considering the relatively low cost of 802.11b wireless network hardware.

Our second speaker for the evening will be past president, Scot, KA6UDZ, who will give us the details on our Field Day 2002 effort. Scot will give the info on our FD score and how the operators did on each band.

So, come to our August 6th meeting. As usual, our doors will open at 7 PM meeting starts about 7:30 PM. Come early and meet Frank Keeney and hit him with your hard networking problems. Frank will field these questions during his lecture I am sure. Incidentally, you may reach Frank at frank@pasadena.net. If you have some questions you would rather email to him, please send them before our Tuesday meeting.

See the Events section at http://www.pasadena.net for meeting directions.
