New from ASUS onboard wifi on a desktop board

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/09...us_p5b_deluxe/

note the RP-SMA on the top edge to the left of all the other plugs.

Further reading shows its a Realtek RTL8187L USB 2.0 controller serving up 802.11a/b/g modes along with 64 station software access point functionality.
But because its a card and not fully intergrated onboard... that leaves options for other vendors one would hope.

What is it with you and news from 2003?

It's a sweet motherboard though. I'll hopefully be purchasing this very similar board soon as the heart of a new Core 2 Duo video rig. Just need to save up the cash!

http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/even.../overview.html

"page not found"

This article was just posted on TheRegister, a site hosted I might add in the UK, ummm isn't THAT where you are from T.O.?

Besides. I am at work, so playing all day is kinda tricky

No worries, I'm only teasing.

Yeah, the link's dead, but I couldn't find (or at least, I couldn't be bothered to find) some of the original pages for it all. I'm sure el Reg covered it back in the day.

And yeah, they're British, as am I. A friend of a friend even works for them.

I think If I get one of those boards I'll pull the wireless module off it and fill up the blanking plate on the back with sticky tape. It's not a hard choice between gigabit ethernet and 802.11g...

The board depicted on my link has dual 1 gig ethernet and the wifi.. I would think you can use this board for that ever so nice all in one firewall, AP, and uplink.

You're right - my description of my intentions wasn't as good as it could have been. I meant to say that I would use the ethernet exclusively and ditch the unused wifi. Just like when I use the ethernet on my laptop and flick the wireless switch to off. As someone with a mild interest in WiFi security, I've decided that the best approach is that when not using it, lose it completly. Ripping the hardware out of the PC solves this problem perfectly.

I like the idea of using it as a router/firewall/access point device. Although I've got a file server running on a fanless 800 mhz Via C3 at home, sometimes I think that's a little over powered and just wasting electricity; replacing it for something with a 500 watt power supply would make me feel very guilty indeed.

Yeah, but it would keep your feet warm in those cold damp English winters!

I'm going to need much more than a space heater PC this winter. But I won't spoil the surprise about that one.

Heh well hopefully the El Nino doesn't give you more cold weather instead of giving it to us. I'm still mad that they're saying that the northeast USA winter is going to be mild again this year. Guess my snowmobile isn't going to get any exercise again this winter.
