Haa haa ha!!
I love that picture on the bottom.
"Gee honey there is this van in front of the house pointing a pringles can at us and blocking our driveway. But I am sure it's nothing. I wonder why my cable modem is flashing those lights even when I am not using my pc." Haa haa haa haa, I just love those drawings. "It's known as "war driving" -- which borrows its name from "War Games," the 1980s movie about computer hackers. " So that's where war driving came from... |

For his part, Dein says he isn't a hacker. It goes against his upbringing.

WD Etymology
The term is actually descended from War Games, so his usage is correct.
It goes like this: War Games, released 1983 > War Dialing, coined about 1 day after the movie was released > War Driving, coined sometime after 2000, unclear exactly when. For those of you who were newbies in 1983: http://neil.franklin.ch/Usenet/alt.a...ling_etymology And a quick quote from that usenet post regarding "War Dialer": More common terms are (or were) demon dialer and auto-redial, both of which first appeared in November 1982, according to Google. Of course the technique is far older than that.

Amongo, good story. Did you approach the paper, or did they find you?

They approached me...
Thorn,
Charlie Ramirez just emailed me out of the blue one day and said that he was dying to do a story on wireless networks and whatnot. So, I said that as long as they were not out to make me look like some sort of bad guy, no problem. So one day a reporter and a photograph showed up at my house. We talked a bit and then I tooked them for a short drive. That was actually several weeks ago. I took them long enough to publish it. --Adam adam@amongo.com http://www.amongo.com |

Actually, I never said that.
I did say that I do not connect to/hack other people's networks due the fact of multiple felonies being involved, thus resulting in harsh jail time that I did not wish to experience. I don't know where the hell he got upbringing. |

I dislike the malicious media and its cancerous spread of disinformation. I avoid them like the plague, and usually say "no comment." I am a fine people person but I can't talk to someone who wants to create "the hacker" to be some evil geek that is out for the world. Little is the realization that if it were not for hackers, technology wouldn't be as far as it is now.
