How to setup the Delorme Earthmate USB-to-Serial for NetStumbler

I was poking around, and forgot how to install the Delorme Earthmate USB puck to use as a GPS for NetStumbler, so I had to re-learn how to do it. This solution is a workaround for the "GPS Timeout" the later Delorme Usb-to-serial drivers cause for Netstumbler.

My version of Netstumbler is 0.40.

First off, you need to download and install the older USB-to-serial port drivers for the Delorme Earthmate from the Delorme support site.

http://www.delorme.com/support/gps/u...=&P=52111&C=19

Extract this, and run it. It will ask you to install either the native Delorme drivers, or the Serial drivers. Select serial.

Allow it to finish.

Plug in the Earthmate.

Navigate to the following directory:

C:\Delorme Docs\Updates\EMateSetup\Util\Driver

Select and run HidComInst.exe

It will bring up a Windows bark message about it not being signed - continue anyway.

Select Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->System.

Select the Hardware tab.

Select Device Manager.

Expand the Ports (CoM & LPT) selection.

You should see the Delorme GPS com device listed. Select it, and right-click, and select Properties. If you don't see it, right-click, and select "Scan for hardware changes". It should come up.

Select the Port Settings tab. Change the "Bits per second" to 4800.

Other settings should be:

Data bits 8

Parity None

Stop bits 1

Flow control None

After that, select the Advanced button, and unselect the "Use Fifo buffers (requires 16550 compatible Uart)"

Select the COM port you want to use in the drop-down at the bottom of the box.

Select OK.

Select OK again, and get out of Device Manager.

Start NetStumbler

My version of it has the GPS settings under View-->Options, in a tab marked GPS.

Select Protocol (Nmea 0183), Port (what you chose), Bits per second (4800), Stop Bits (1), Data bits (8), Flow Control (None), Parity (None), and select OK.

Your Earthmate should be detected and reading data almost immediately.

This is not an optimal solution - it requires a re-install of the drivers if you want to use WAAS. But, it works, and if you're more into stumbling than you are into mapping, it works okay. Re-installing takes less time than installing this way.

Happy Stumbling!
