Hi @ all,
now that i'm proud owner of Airopeek NX i noticed something strange: First, Netstumbler began to do some strange things, e.g showing me AP's up without SSID. MAC adress and signal strength were visible, but simply no SSID was available. Another interesting thing: It was an "unwepped" signal outside a bank. ![]() Could it be that these special Airopeek drivers enable some unkown functions? Greetings da RTK

Interesting... sounds like it may be unlocking some of the passive scanning/monitoring behavior like Kismet does.
Is that Airopeek NX driver only available for XP, or can it be found anywhere for 98SE? |

Netstumbler work fine with Airopeek NX drivers under XP.
thats AP is configured not to show SSID at "ANY" requests. SSID Broadcast Disabled - ON - on ATMEL base AP. Closed AP or Closed Network - on Orinoco AP. Airopeek drivers put wireless card into promis mode with open 1-11 or 1-14 chanels listen for any wireless transmision. |

from my little knowledge (feel free to correct me if i'm wrong with this): netstumbler is NOT able to detect access-points that have ssid-broadcasting disabled. it might be possible that these ap's you are talking about just had set ssid to "blank" or simply used spaces. i've seen ap's of this kind multiple times, and tried both kismet and netstumbler to see what's going on. both resulted in a blank (or spaces) ssid. so nothing magic in here... next is the terms: "cloaked" access-point means: broadcasting of ssid in the beacon packets have been disabled closed wireless-lan means: a client is not able to associate with ssid set to blank or "any". it does not mean that this ap has ssid-broadcasting disabled. cheers

I've tested with my RG-1100. I have 'Private Network' turned on, which means it's not supposed to broadcast the ssid or allow connections from hosts without the correct ssid set. I also have an ssid configured.
On the laptop I did not have an ssid configured (blank/any) and running NetStumbler it detected the access point, but showed a blank ssid. |
