Q: How can I tell the difference between the old "Classic" Orinoco
cards and the new Proxim one's that don't like working with Netstumbler? A: Look Here....

Pre-Proxim Orinoco card spotters guide. Any of these three versions (gold OR silver) will work with NetStumbler and have external antenna jacks. The newer Proxim Versions MAY not.
Left to right, older to newer.... Lucent WaveLAN, Lucent Orinoco, Agere Orinoco. If anybody else has pictures of the other variants, like Dell TrueMobile and Compaq versions, that would be very helpful.

the main thing to look for in all the variants is the shape of the antenna end...the characteristic squared off thick rectangle and antenna port on the end are a dead giveaway. the proxim variants' antennae look different. if the antenna looks like an orinoco, it IS an orinoco regardless of what sticker you see on it.
and to be extra sure just look at the FCC ID on the back. it's always IMRWLPCE24H no matter if it's a silver or gold or whatever branding. the pics posted by peekitty above say it all. and notice on madhadder's proxim photo the rounded flatter antenna.

Thought this might help.
The Orinoco card on the left works fine with MiniStumbler. The Proxim card does not. Item of note: the drivers that come with Proxim card for CE will detect the Orinoco card but the Orinoco driver wont work for the Proxim Card....hence I have 2 drivers and 2 client managers on my Ipaq. Driver WLAGS46b1 for the Proxim card and the Agere client manager and driver WLLUC461 for the Orinoco card and the Orinoco client manager. |

re: above Buffalo card
remember to look for the thread that clearly states, the AirStation card will only work under W2000, and then only if you hex edit the firmware, clent and driver software, so it accepts the orinoco client manager, firmware upgrade etc.. I've done it, and it works fine. |
