Here is a thread for all of the questions that need to be written up for the faq. Add some, and then answer some! Please post the answers in the other FAQ thread to keep everything as organized as possible.

The top of my original message disappeared. Anyway, I searched the forum for these answers and they are all conflicting. At least the answers I found were. So I put it in a basic format. If anyone or group would like to answer, I will reformat with answers and post in the FAQ thread. Thanks!
1. Passive monitoring (def.)-grabbing packets right out of the air and be undetected. a) Possible w/Orinoco? i) What firmware version? ii) What driver version? iii) With which sniffing program? 2. Promiscuious mode (def.)-the ability of the adapter to be able to receive packets not intended for it. a)Possible w/Orinoco? i) What firmware version? ii) What driver version? iii) With which sniffing program? 3. What are the the advantages with using an older Orinoco driver? 4. What are the the disadvantages with using an older Orinoco driver? 5. Can I flash my driver/firmware down to 6.16 to use Wellenreiter and still use it for NetStumbler, Airopeek(Wildpackets driver) and Sniffer 4.7? a)Can I reflash to newest driver/firmware? YES! 6. Airopeek - Able to pick up most packets promiscuious mode & passive monitoring. Correct? a) If yes, what Orinoco driver/firmware version? b) If no, then what can it do. 7. Iris - does not support 802.11b sniffing so in order to use, you have to be connected to the network. a) Is this considered to be in promiscuious mode 8. Sniffer 4.7 - supports full featured monitoring and analysis of IEEE 802.11/802.11b Wireless LAN networks. a) Passive monitoring or promiscuious mode or both. b) If both, what Orinoco driver/firmware version?

FAQ Questions
Question: Besides generating a GPS related database, how can I work with the .ns1 data format? Can I export it to or read it with Excel or a flat file database? How do I use the merge feature to create a master file?
Edit: These two questions were answered in the FAQ 06-20-2003. Question: If I run NetStumbler and my client manager at the same time, does one interfere with the other? Does scan speed have an effect on maintaining a connection in the background? Last edited by Thorn : 06-20-2003 at 09:20 AM. |

Orinoco/Lucent/Proxim Card Firmware
Q: My Lucent/Orinoco/Proxim Gold or Silver card is reported as "unsupported". A: The drivers that come preinstalled with Windows may not be compatible with Netstumber. Upgrade to the latest drivers and card firmware from http://support.proxim.com/ In particular, the Windows 2000 drivers are known not to work with Netstumbler. |
