No more commfoolering around... Live position tracking from NetStumbler to MapPoint

(MapPoint 2002)

I took the bus from Edmonton to Calgary today (47 AP's...), so I had time to actually get this script working, it's smooth and slick, I had 20 onlookers behind me drooling over the live map & noisy stumbling...

I think ya'll love the tracking icon...

I have to get me a notebook. Unfortunatelyu, I spent 5G on a Voodoo computer that is one of the least-portable computers I have ever seen.

Yeah, but it's a voodoo man! I'm sitting beside my last "folly", it sounds like a jet airplane... last I counted the thing had 9 fans...

I became a laptop user about a year ago. Now, I'm a total convert. Servers should be racks and hidden away, and all else should be portable... well, at least for homes.

OK, so how does this work? When I run the VBScript, it opens up a map, asks if I want to save changes, then closes. I do not yet have my GPS cable, so is that necessary to be plugged in? Or do I need to run this from within mappoint or netstumbler?

actually, as soon as i press the apply button in netstumbler options after having selected the script in VB, netstumbler opens mappoint 2002 with a new map and a little wardriver symbol. the thing is, that the gps data is coming from ns and that's why there's no com port sharing denied (correct me, if i am wrong )

hmmm I was wondering this, normally, can you not run mappoint GPS and NS GPS at the same time? That would be very secksi if this little script could do that!

exactly, look at the topic: No more commfoolering around... Live position tracking from NetStumbler to MapPoint
this implicates that the used GPS data comes from NS and not from MP. NS "exports" the GPS data to MP.

hope this helps

yeah I see that, but just for clarification, you can't do GPS on mappoint and NS at the same time WITHOUT this, right? Obviously you can't plot AP's on the fly without this, but can you at least have your location being recorded as you are netstumbling?

Obviously this script is the remedy, but I was just wondering.. I guess I can find out for myself once my cables get here!

You can have MP2k2 and NS use the same GPS at the same time, but not in every configuration. For instance in my setup of XP, a USB to Serial converter, ComFoolery and Device Manager it only works for a short while. The issue is discussed in a few threads, but it will work in some setups.

I'm considering getting a Y-cable and another USB to Serial converter and pointing each app to a different physical port, but I'm not sure that will fix it.

Hi Thunderforge, have you got any thoughts as to why your set-up has the problem and others (well mine, anyway) doesn't? It's curious that it runs for 10-15min and then bogs out - but I can't work out what that should be telling me.

Mine had six originally before I started to unplug as a result of the noise level. IMO, that much noise is acceptable in a situation such as a server room but not from a single desktop.

I agree 100%. As soon as I can afford a decent laptop, I'm snatching it up. Any recommendations as to brand? I'm thinking Dell or Toshiba.

I really like my Sager 5650, but it weighs a ton, so that kinda sucks.

Hmmm, I haven't seen that happen. I have seen weird errors if the GPS times out, looses signal... There is no real error handling. As well, this only tracks your current position, it doesn't trace your overall route. Still have some work to do. I've run it successfully for 6-7 hours stretches with no problems.

Business people swear by Toshiba, I however... swear by Dell. For price/performance, you can't beat 'em.
