Lucent Antenna

I'm using the Orinco/Lucent antenna. My mounting method for this was to take a VERY strong magnet, wrap it in a layer of duct tape to prevent rust, and then wrap a layer around both it AND the base of the antenna. TaDa! Instant mag mount :-)

What is everyone's opinion on type of car attenna? Use an omni for best potential or use a directional and just make sure you do alot of sweeps when cruising streets?

My concern is that the basic omni is very low powered and without an amp I am pretty much stuck with that freaking 1 foot lucent cable to connect to my omni. Not much playing room if you want to truly mount the attenna in a good spot. My understanding that if I add any extensions to the lucent cable I will be dropping 2-4 db right away. I could afford to lose that with a decent directional attenna but not a standard 5db omni....

Thoughts, observations, comments???

Wireless [MOBILE] Antenna for Lucent

I use a Mobile from http://www.HyperLinkTech.com

It was $60 I think, and it has the Lucent Pigtail, and a 10 foot low loss cable. The Omni directional Mobile antenna gives me much better signal strength, and I can pick up a network signal from 1-2 blocks away now, where I used to be on the same block to get signal. The omni directional antenna is a great addition to any car, works wonders for me!

hypertech

hey funny thing i was driving down the road and hypertech
happened to be on the right hand side of the road.
I went in with my wireless card
and tried to get a mobile antenna.
they told me that they couldnt set up an antenna
with a magnet.
I would need to drill a hole in the car...
apartently they claimed that the antenna has a piece sticking out the bottom that you mount to your car.
I dont want to do all that...
Does your antenna do that...
How did you rig it..

antenna mounting

atapi,
Some antennas require thru-hole mounting... such as the mobile one that you saw. The Avaya (Lucent) "range extender" antenna is intended to sit on a desk, or cube wall, or can be screwed to a table/wall as well... There are mobile magnetic mount one too (www.antennasystems.com sells a mag mount one). Basically you just need to figure out a way to hold the antenna vertically and securely, with wind (driving)... if this means glueing the range-extender to a magnet, fine. I don't recommend buying a thru-hole antenna unless you actually plan on mounting it to a piece of metal that you then attach to the vehicle... as these antennas are sometimes tuned/designed to use the car's chassis as a ground plane. Standalone antennas such as the range extender or the patch antenna's are good ones to stick where you want em.

PN - HG2403MU

I just got my antenna from HyperLinkTech. It is using a standard NMO mount, so I will be able to use a lip mount and only make a few screw holes. I might also be able to get it hooked up to a MAG mount.

I will test it out and post my findings.

It's Great!

I love this antenna. I found AP's in areas I drove by every day without the antenna. It is also very small, only 2 inches tall.

Over 10 new AP's found within 2 blocks (previously undetected) the first time out using the new setup....

Antennas for cars

I have been trying to follow the replies and check out all the links to add a mobile antenna to my setup. For the life of me I still can not figure out how to attach this mobile antenna to my Orinoco Gold card. Can anyone explain how the attachment is made? Also, someone else with this card can you provide the part number that you used from www.hyperlinktech.com for the 2.4Ghz magnetic mount antenna? Thank you in advance for your help. This is a blast! Was actually able to surf the web away from home from a open AP today.... I am ready for more!!!

Whats What

The Antenna I use is a HG2403MU ( http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/hg2403mu.html ) It is a 3db antenna, and works great. It uses a standard NMO mount to mount the antenna. If you want to use a mag mount you will need to get one with an NMO style connector and a terminating connector of the other sex from your adapter cable. NMO mag mounts are everywhere and there are a bunch of vendors, just try and find one with low loss coax. If you can not get one with a teminating N connector, you might have to get an adapter (this is what I did). Most NMO magmounts terminate with a UHF (PL259) style connector, and you would need to adapt that to N.

As far as plugging the stuff into your card, you will need one of the following: http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/cable_adapter.html
CA-WL2CABLE1
CA-WL2CABLE2
CA-WL2CABLE3
(different only by terminating connector)

If you have any questions feel free to email me.
