AP Ethernet MAC address

I have been researching how NetStumbler determines the Ethernet MAC address of an AP. Here is what the on-line help says:

[The text contains the BSSID for wireless devices. The icon shows the signal strength as reported in the last scan: Gray means the item was not detected, or a colored icon ranging from red to green reports the signal strength. A lock appears in the icon if encryption is enabled on the network. For devices on a wired network segment, the icon shows a T-shaped network cable and the MAC address is displayed.]

I have also seen a posting where the author was saying that apparently, for Cisco Aironet AP's, NetStumbler sends multicast packets to port 2887 to determine the MAC address.

Bottom line, I am looking for documentation or an explanation on how and for which devices NetStumbler is capable to determine the Ethernet MAC address of a given AP.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Al

It's part of the 802.11 specs. The MAC address is contained in each packet transmitted by the AP and the clients.

In general NetStumbler provides the wireless LAN MAC address of the AP's. In some cases it is able to determine the wired LAN MAC address of an AP as well.

The IEEE 802.11-1999 specifications does not necessarly mention that the wired LAN MAC address is included in the frames, to the best of my knowledge.

Therefore I wonder how NetStumbler can determine, sometime, the wired LAN MAC address of an AP.

Where have you seen this happen? That is a new feature to me. All I have seen is the AP wireless MAC or the MAC from a wireless card.
