database
database and maping forum would be good...
I would like to know if the database is live on the web and if anyone can access it mabye a search methiod... to find nearest access points... and more fields like comment fields... this data is all cool but unless we can add comments on whos AP we find then it will not do us any good other than showing us where there are access Points like fields I would like to see are (Comment, address, contact name for AP,email for the person in charge of the ap,person who located the AP, email of the person who located the ap) All these fields could be optional but I know I would like to be able to add info to them... |

database stuff
I see alot of the info there but the lon and lat is missing
Its in the links but on in the list... I would like to be able to do a query by putting in my location and finding the nearist access point.... then being able to do advanced searches.. for open networks in an area... say for example I go to texas... If i look through the list of access points i cant really tell where the access points are located. i actually have to click on them... or a better methoid would be if you could zoom in on the map of the us... and see a closer map of the states and locations of all access points... |

Open Map Points
I don't believe that the purpose of their project is to let you know were open network points are. You should try personal telco for something like that. I think they are trying to map wireless AP (not public ACCESS POINTS) in order to show the proliferation of wireless networking.

Ummm...
The MAP\database simply shows access pojnts. NO indication as to whether or not they're "open" is made. I'm not even sure the dB is displaying whether or no encryption is being used. I think that allowing zooming would be a VERY good idea, particularly if it oculd be overlayed with a street map. The purpose wouldn't be to show what points are open but rather where WAPs in general are located. I've submitted mine, it's wide open (for now), I've got no problems with that. NetStumbler simply locates things, no biggie. I DO wish that we could do a little DF - as things stand now I believe the database is simply showing where things were picked up and not attempting to determine where they'e actually located. that's a much more complicated task thugh and would require much more data and data correlation....
Hrm, perhaps make the database available for download so that some enterprising person could refine the dataset further? since they're accepting summary inputs though I'd expect that a GREAT deal of data is being discarded. Bummer... |
