For those of you who don’t read the main page, I suggest you take a look at the Doonesbury article, but just incase I will include the picture for you. What do you all think this means? Is it good? Is it bad? I’m not sure what I think just yet.

Are we doomed?

I see it as It is bad publicity. I interpreted as a mockingly being thrown to the same level as software piracy, illegal p2p software/music/movie trading... Sure it is funny to read... but imagine the millions of sheep that read this that have no clue what stumbling is, it probably isn't as funny for them. ... again another example of the free speech double-edged sword.

Email & P2P
Sometimes it is that easy to sniff email.
If the link is not encrypted, neither is email. If email is not encrypted, his daughter is calling to the wind. --- Tonight is the Fox 11 News (Los Angeles station) covering warchalking, wardriving, and other stuff. Their soundbite teaser went something like this: The next Napster? Watch how easy it is to get free internet. Tonight, on Fox 11 News at 10.

Is it good? Is it bad? I’m not sure what I think just yet. My first reaction was that it is interesting that idea of someone else accessing wireless from the street has suddenly gone mainstream. While the cartoon certainly exaggerates the ease of some of this stuff, the point is that the "sheep" (to use BW's) term are becoming aware that wireless LAN security is problem; the EXACT same thing that many of of here have been saying. If it's in the funny pages, then it is no longer something that techies only are aware of as a problem. That is a good thing. I'm sure that yesterday (Monday) morning there was a flurry of activity in some places, but people will forget in a week or so. The bad side is that Stumbling will be equated with stealing bandwidth, or cracking "your daughter's email", etc. But that has already happened. Hardly a week goes by that some new person on the forums starts with a "How do I crack a network?" line of questions. Usually they are quickly knocked down, but the fact that they are even asking indicated that there is an association in people's minds with Stumbling as a activity and illegal actions such as stealing bandwidth or attacking networks. For example this recent thread and the postings of travis9 make that clear: http://forums.netstumbler.com/showth...&threadid=2839
