How to scan / alternatives to NetStumbler
I travel all over the USA for business and I want find some networks. The only utility I have is the Wireless Lan Configuration Utility that came with my linksys card. I know that my card is not support by NetStumbler so my question is will this utility work? I know that I have to set the SSID, it doesn't pick that up. I've tried scanning a bunch of places already using the default SSID of 101, but I haven't found anything yet. Am I wasting my time using the linksys utility? Is there another option? I'm running Win2k on my laptop so no linux utilities, please.

It is possible, I have the Linksys USB wireless card. Set the Configuration to Infastructure and set the SSID to 0. I usually turn of Power Management. Then go to the search tab and keep hitting search. It's not quite the same as netstumbler since there's no way to plot a finding. But I used it to find a number of Wireless LANs in my area. You may want to go to the linksys site and update your firmware and driver though. I found this helped considerably.

Hmm, someone is using the LinkSys USB Nic. Is that working well with you?
I have started a thread under the Hardware area in hopes of getting full info on the various USB Wireless NICs out there so if you could provide comments there that would be great. Out of couriosity, why Linksys? Only thing available or did you research it a little and decide that was the one you liked? Thanks. John K. |
