Not unusual for a honeypot.

Interesting. I doubt it was a honeypot though. It was in a residential area out in the country.

So if you accessed the honeypot you will probably get prosecuted for it?

Just depends on why it is there. The one here at home is just for S & G's (and as a test bed). The box at work is for an entirely different reason.

Let's put it this way: You face potential prosecution for accessing ANY network that you don't have permission to be using. If you use a network without permisson, you're playing a fool's game.

For a look at some of the bigger convictions, take a look at the WiFi Hacking = goto Jail thread. In additon to those crime listed, in some jurisdictions (notably some counties in Illinois) the SA (or DA) is charging the attackers with Theft of Services.

Those SSID's that have people's address's listed etc.. you almost get tempted to type up a letter on your printer then handling the paper with gloves, followed by using a self sealing envelope and stamp to send it.

the letter would tell em that an entity has discovered your wireless network and they need to exercise some security. Never done this to any of the ones I have found but the thought of it was quite amusing.

My local CompUSA has an AP called "PC Load Letter".

Most of the ssid's i run into are default like linksys, netgear, or default. It really irks me that most businesses dont care enough about there customer info, and leave there wireless networks wide open.

Yup, but what can you do? Accessing the AP is very ILLEGAL and we DISCOURAGE that here, and going up to the store manager is worse...

I did get away with war-walking once at a business in Houston.. a friend of mine was one of the network admins and I met him for lunch, as he and I were riding the elevator up to his office I had stumbler going and got 4-5 AP's.
i told em he had wireless, he denied it, but when we got to his office, I showed him the MAC's, he did an ARP cache lookup from the routers and found 1 of them.. the others we went to the floors I detected em on and we narrowed it down to 2 offices.. seems these people had used the USB wifi adapters.

I found out later that those who had installed wifi were terminated for security reasons.

my friend has gone out and got a nice Ipaq with the sleave and the gold card.. plus he has read alot of stuff about detection now...

Point is that alot of admins do not know too much about wifi and how easy it is to set up.

I know of a datacenter that has 5 3com AP's in it.. all are secure, but they are still broadcasting. Their CTO swears its not theirs... but I have done directional yagi detection on their building.. and its coming from their building.

The CTO has 3-4 network engineers that have in the past done things that would make you question their talents
