Mac address question (possible new feature?)
I have seen the mac address changed with a Windows machine but I can't seemed to find how to do that with a Silver Orinoco card. Can anyone suggest where to look for doing this? And I think that would be an interesting addon for NetStumbler, a custom Mac Address feature. :-)
Thanks. John K. |

What version of Client Manager are you using? I downloaded latest of everything this week and I don't see the same options. :-(
At the Add/Edit Configuration Profile I have a choice of "Add" for a new profile, "Edit" for an existing profile, or "Delete". I choose "Edit" and it then takes me to a Edit Configuration window which shows the profile's name and allows me to change the network type from Access Point to Residential Gateway or Peer to Peer Group. The only way off this window is Next and there is no Admin option. As such I never see the rest of the options you explain to actually change the Mac address. Per Help I am using OriNOCO Client Manager Variant 1, Version 2.00. Would be intersted in seeing if that is same as yours and if not how I could obtain a copy of yours and see if that helps. :-) Thanks! John K. |

Very Sure.
OS: Win98SE Computer: Fujitsu Stylistic 1200 From ORiNOCO Client Manager/Help/Version Info Utility: Client Manager - Variant 1 Version 2.18 Driver: NDIS 5 Miniport Driver - Variant 1 Version 6.28 Card: Blah Blah Blah Firmware: Primary Fuctions - Variant 1 Version 4.04 Station Functions - Variant 1 Version 7.52 I upgraded firmware and client manager a few days back. The new firmware is supposed to take care of microwave robustness - so that function is no longer needed in software...according to what someone told me. If you update your miniport driver to the v7.x version you will get the "linear" menu and lose the Network MAC function. And note, the Network MAC option will not let you choose any old MAC address, it looks like it blocks known manufacturer NIC vendor MAC's (or only allows easily identifiable network MACs), but at least it makes it harder for someone to trace a firmware MAC back to you... See: http://www.coffer.com/mac_find/ BTW, I tested this on my own AP and it sees the spoofed MAC, and not the hardcoded MAC. It's a good way to test if your MAC filtering works. It's pretty easy to swap back and forth between new and older miniport drivers, though, in case you want to use the new driver at home and the older one for driving around. Just keep both versions on your hard drive and use the update driver function and reboot after changing versions. Going from old to new and back to old again will even keep the network MAC adress(es) you entered intact. SK SK |
