Why is 2k/XP now required? I've been waiting for a LONG time for this release, simply due to the fact that my laptop can only run 98SE or less. Finally 0.4 comes out, and I can't use it. Just my luck!

Are you sure it won't run 2K? I've seen it on some pretty old and slow laptops. It was breathing hard like a fat kid climbing stairs but a slow 2K install is still way better than any 98/ME install.

Problem is the hardware... Some of us use old 486ish type lappys
that can't run Win2k. I have a Toshiba Libretto 70ct that runs Win98
just fine, but anything more that that is not possible...

So for this Lappy, I'm gonna stick with NS .30. I use Orinoco Gold
cards so I don't have any probs. with card compatibility..

I tried upgrading to 2k a while back, but it wouldn't work with my 16-bit PCMCIA slots. It insisted on using 32 bit drivers, which of course are incompatible. So the OS and Netstumbler will run, but I won't be able to use my 802.11b card. Or, I stick with 98SE and a working card, but no netstumbler. Oh well. Guess i'll have to get an Orinoco card, install 0.3, and just be done with this whole fiasco.

0.4 will run on Win9x just fine with an ORiNOCO card. My "acid test" unit is a Pent-I, 100MHz, 16MB. While the initialization is a bit slower than 0.3.30 (about 10 seconds), once 0.4 opens it runs without a hitch.

Confirmed, I can uses NS .4 with win98, but I am using a 66mhz with 128M ram. It runs slower than roadkill. You just ain't gonna have all of the new nifty card support.

I bought an Orinico Gold card, it's on its way. Does anyone have a link to download 0.3, in case 0.4 runs crappily on my system?

Works fine with DLINK DWL 520+ PCI Card

Like a charm ...however, for extra flexibility, I also
own a Linksys WUSB 2.5 wireless client, and as long
as you have no preferred network/profile in the Linksys
proprietary site survey tool, it will pick up surrounding
SSID's fine inside NetStumbler.

Otherwise, if you indicated a preferred SSID /profile in
that proprietary tool, then it will warn you that the Linksys
USB wireless card is not in promiscuous mode, and you
need to fix it. So, powering down the PC, and rebooting
with the no preferred SSID in the other tool, enables
Netstumbler to work.

I also noticed the utility stops the Zero Configuration Utility
inside windows XP.

Yes it does. I think there is a revision in the works that will restart WZC upon NS exit.
