Old Lucent Firmware?

Gr33tz,

Seems i recall at Defcon Peter Shipley mentioning that he recommended getting the old firmware for the Orinoco cards. Does anybody have this, or point me to a website?

I too was getting the "not seeing card" card error. I updated my driver with the one on Orinocowirless website and that solved that problem. Now i'm getting the "Radio Disabled" message. I've seen a couple posts with no answers, has anyone resolved this. I'm hoping the above firmware downgrade may solve this...seems like he mentioned that the older firmware allowed the snooping while the newer does not??? Can anyone refresh my memory or provide more info.

Thanks!!

Fireware

Accually, you only need the old firmware if your using Peter's script, or lucent's site servay program. If your using NetStumbler you need the newest firmware form orinoco. I was at DefCon, (second row) and have been tring to figure out what Peter ment by that backflash commit till today... The old firmware is on orinoco's ftp server, sorta hiden, but there...

Mobile Antenna

I am using a MAXRAD 2.4GHz antenna with a magnetic mount. The part number is BMAXC 24505. You will need a seperate mag mount BGMML195. The antenna is 7" tall and has a 5dbi gain. The cable is 12Ft long and is LMR195 (low loss).

You can go to maxrad.com to get a supplier, and then you will need to get a pigtail to go to your pc card. Try allrfcables.com

This setup works great .

On Lucent Firmware...

I can tell you for a fact that I am using a Lucent Gold card *WITH* the newer firmware, and it works just fine with NetStumbler (under Win2k, with proper cardbus support).

The only thing that the older firmware gives you is the ability to enter a sort of "promiscuous mode". That feature, (and here's the really key part) combined with the proper software allows you to snoop traffic (email, documents, etc.) off of the wireless connection.

But for just using NetStumbler, you don't need it.

With netstumbler you can pickup configurations of wireless LANs right? I mean.. lets say I picked up 2 networks... I can see what ESS number they are using... replace mine with that.. and surf the internet using their LAN.. right??

Where's the firmware?

The firmware I've spotted on their site is th enewer stuff, isn't it? Version 6 if I recall? It wasn't in any of the subdirectories but was up above them. I checked my version and am pretty sure it's THAT version however it will NOT go into promiscious mode! If someone has the older firmware that they KNOW will work for this please send me an URL or shoot me a copy for me to host. Pretty please :-)

more info

ok i'm probably just adding some confusion to this thread but, i've got a couple links regarding older firmware...

http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Wavelan-IEEE.html (wrapped)

ftp://ftp.wavelan.com/pub

Now i have'nt read thru these really yet but it *appears* that promiscuous mode can be achieved thru linux with firmware versions 6.16 and earlier. Dig thru the ftp site and you can find 6.16 version there. (Is the Orinocowireless website version 6.10 really different???)Now please don't jack up your card until you do some more research here, i'm just trying to spit out some ideas/urls. Let me know what ya'll find out.

Now another question, will the early Wavelan firmware run on an Orinoco card? I assume so since the hardware has just changed names, but i'm not sure about chipsets etc.

keep digging, one of us will get it.
