IIRC, "find me an AP" is not the point...
I could be wrong, but I don't believe the point of the map is to make it easier for you to find your nearest Internet access point. I believe the point of the map is to give an overall picture of how extensive the adoption of 802.11 really is - and thus, how widespread of a problem this is (given that most don't have WEP enabled).

map uses
agree with the FP - it'd be nice to zoom in and/or search by region. it'd be nice to see what other nets are active from other searches to resolve interference probs. where we're at, theres a wisp that's amped well past fcc regs and makes 802.11 a problem in spots. it's nice to know where others have found their nodes so we can work around their mess...

I have to say that I think toomer is right, I dont think the purpose of netstumbler's database is to show you where you can get online to check your hotmail or whatnot but rather to show the widespread adoption of 802.11b and the "default"ness of alot of WAPs and how insecure they may or maynot be.

proliferation of wireless networks
Id have to disagree
If you want to see the profileration of wireless networks all you would have to do is get the us and world wide sales of 802.11 equipment. you wouldnt need to collect a huge database of networks but this data is going to waste with out some methoid to search it. I browse throught the first page of networks and i dont get anything i see network after network in california. what if i want to see the number of networks in DC as opposed to new york. or any other region Anyone could write a script to pull all the links off the pages and get all the data. note the long and lats are in the url for the map querys it would just be nicer to pull up state/region/city/ and see the networks for that area this would tell you more about the make up of networks and the need for security professionals if you dont want to share information because you dont want people using this as a database for finding networks then dont put maps at all only put statical data. Plus the other big advantage is to stop people from having to repeast networks it would be nice if we could download the latest copy of the complete database and import it in to our data before we went driving around so we wouldnt have to repeat the same paths.... |
