Suggestions for next version...
Been driving around like mad lately, and my friend and I have some suggestions for the next version.
1) Ability to make "notes" about each finding. We don't have a GPS system (yet), and it's hard to remember where we found each AP. 2) Sound options. I know it plays ir_begin.wav when it finds a new AP, how about the ability to play a sound while it has a signal from an AP? I would love a continous soft "bing" while I have a signal, so I can actually pay attention to where I'm driving. Well, that's about all I can remember. Love the software! Can't wait for the next version. |

How about a save feature for the scan speed.
I hate having to always set my scan speed to fast.
I agree with the comments for a location. I too don't have GPS (yet). Built-in packet capturing and WEP-cracking would be good! LOL An Alt-B (B for BOSS or P for PIG) key for when the cops pull me over. I can hit Alt-B and change the screen to reflect a Site Survey Tool (or some other 'official' looking software) LMAO Maybe a feature to randomize your MAC and workgroup/machine name upon exiting NS or rebooting the machine. This way, it'd be harder to prove it was you by the MAC or machine name. Password protected logs (encryption) to prevent them from being used against us! (I know, PGP the whole machine...) I've got a couple serious suggestions:
Make it an option to change the sort order from "most recently discovered site" to "most recent hit". I also like the idea that was already mentioned about having a noise associated with any 'hit' and not just new sites. A hot-key to restart the GPS communication would be handy. My GPS times out quite a bit...but if I restart NS, it comes up working just fine. I'm guessing W2K gets the blame for 'taking over' something. |

A 'sound' idea - tones based on signal strength
Hey, instead of the IR wav file, how about playing tones based on the strength of the AP that is found? This would make for easy audible homing in on a signal. Good for those of us who have our laptop stowed away in a bag, but we're still stumbling.
The tones would increase in pitch and/or frequency as the signal strength got better. -Toomer |

More ideas.
I want a signal strength window of the current accessed AP and/or current detected AP. This needs to be at the top of the columns on the main page. Also, sort by the current detected AP and/or connected AP.
Make the signal histogram scroll automatically so the most receint recording is always on the screen. Make SCAN FASTEST the default. Have NS maintain a current session NS1 file as well as a master.ns1 file automatically. The audio prompts mentioned already are a must. Let people change the background and fonts. The white background stands out like a sore thumb at night in my van. (I use a 17" monitor.) Can NS work as a spectrum analyzer? This would be cool to detect other 2.4GHz items of 'interest'. This would actually make a really cool site survey tool. You could then see a weak AP on channel 3 and its relation to another AP on channel 4. Phones in the 2.4GHz range would also then show up! Hum...FHSS spikes would probably go too fast though. Tron Of Borg |
