List
Perhaps that was the database generated by Peter Shipley. If that's the case, I don't expect you'll see it published anywhere anytime soon. Peter has publicly stated that he does not intend to make all of this data publicly available. Read his war-driving interview article in theregister.co.uk.

Specific quote from Peter...
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/8/18285.html
Now, in the same spirit, and with the help of some hobbyist friends, Shipley plans to "war drive" the streets of San Francisco, Oakland, and portions of Silicon Valley to the south. When he's done, he'll have a database that maps the geographic location of, in all likelihood, thousands of open 802.11 networks. He doesn't plan on publishing the raw data -- he doesn't want to help attackers spot choice targets -- but he says the numbers will speak for themselves. "I can give you the density of open networks an area, organized by zip code," says Shipley. "People don't believe there's a security problem if you don't prove it to them." |

DC is me...
Most of that is probably me, expect it to skyrocket before too long as friends come online :-) The Delaware is also mine.
Driving down 95 might not get you much data to be honest unless you hit urban areas. I drove to Delaware recently and the amount of data gathered was pretty sparse, some of it was also lost. Occasionally my serial barfs and I have to tinker (sigh). I'll be VERY interested to see the data you find, might be surprising. Hopefully the folks here in VA will start to pump out data soon, will be interesting to see the little dots appear. I know there are more than 300 sites here but we've got no geo data YET. Expect that to change VERY soon. I'll share my data, it's not like someone couldn't get it on their own if this was an area of interest to them. I doubt I'll be telling anyone who's vulnerable though. Aside from the fact that I don't spend much time figuring that out I think it's pretty uncool to make it THAT easy... |

i would think it would be better to publish it here
I would think it would be better to publish it here
than to go to companys and say hey i just saw your wireless network is wide open... you should really secure that lol there bound to get mad instead of thanking you for your assistance... then again who knows they may say they left it open for everyone to use and then you could add them to the wireless groups that are popping up in every nieghboorhood I would like to be able to use the information to contact people to either tell them to secure there network or to invite them to publish the access point.. |

Should be interesting...
Where in Alexandria? I'd think that Old Town would be chock full of WAPs and might even be a good place to start a Public Free network withthe density of buildings. Out more towardss the West I'd think it would be harder - more trees for one thing. Well, not many more trees these days and fewer by the day but... :-(
Heh, a shame the database doesn't track who submitted what. Would be really cool to have a bit of a contest going to see who's submited the most "unique" entries per state. I think I know who would win for VA but it sure won't be me. A friend of mine spends tons of time on the road and scans while he's driving. TONs of sites. Anyone done Baltimore or Richmond? Shold be lot's of sites out there... |
