192.168.0.1 and 169.254.252.131 help! :(

I have a wireless netgear 802.11G setup and I have a laptop wirelessly connected w/ a G card. came company same everything i know its compatable. I also have a PC Desktop connected via the lan over cat5 to the wireless router. well both the laptop and the desktop have windows 98. The laptop's ip is 192.168.0.5 and the desktops ip is 169.254.252.131 and the laptops subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and the desktop is 255.255.0.0. can someone explain this? I tried reinstalling tcp/ip protocols and such. and also how can I fix this? i want to be able to share files between the laptop and the desktop

P.S. both the settings on the laptop and desktop in network properties are the same. set ip to automatically get thru dhcp server. there is no static ip set on either machine.

Aight, should be an easy solution but first: what model is the router/AP? persuming you have a internet connection, do they both use the connection successfully? Finally, are you running DHCP (i would guess you are)?

actually, i'm having the same issue (or at least i think it is). I'm getting a 169 address on my laptop with a built in microsoft b card. I'm using a linksys b router. All the other computers i have are functioning fine with the DHCP server (192.168.1.x address range w/ 255.255.255.0). I've already tried reinstalling TCP/IP and going through the steps to fix a possible corrupted Winsock problem (followed the instructions at microsoft's site). Any help would be appreciated, as i do not have access to a means to reinstall windows. laptop is running XP, by the way. I have no idea how this could have happened. I just came home one day, turned on the laptop and found it like this (although i've heard of that happening to a bunch of other people).

The 169.254 address is an automatically assigned address when the client can't find the DHCP server. Are you using MAC address filtering that hasn't included the desktop?

Make sure the subnet mask on the desktoip is the same as the settings on the router. Once that's done do a release/renew on the desktop, see if that helps.

How do you set the subnet mask without setting an ip address with it, and not making it static? You cant.

I tried the ip renew thing. it gave me the same ip again.

I don't think he's angry, just pissed at the technology. Try setting the ip info manually within the range of the router settings to see if can at least talk to the router that way.

Have you tried a different port in the router? Have you tried a different cable? Are you using a regular patch cable or crossover?
