Unhappy AirCrack - BroadCom 4311 help

Hey everyone, I'm using a Compaq X6000 outfitted with a broadcom wireless card. I'm not positive what chipset I'm using, and I don't know how to find out.

Anyway, I tried installing the unsupported BroadCom driver from wildpackets.com, but was unable to detect any networks with it. It installs alright, but no networks come up when I know they should.

I read somewhere that linux can simply do "monitor" mode with wireless cards - I got a live distro, "BackTrack", which boasts an impressive plethora of network hacks and toys. That boots up fine.

Unfortunately, it doesn't detect my wireless card. I don't think it has my drivers yet. What do I do!?

Any and all help is appreciated,
phrzn

Go over to the aircrack forums. This is (obviously) the netstumbler forums.

Buy another card.

Broadcom sucks for *nix use. The company refuses to release drivers, and the only drivers available for *nix are betas that have been reverse engineered.

Would a USB wifi card do? And if so, which would you recommend?

That would depend on which USB card, as to whether is would do.

Aside from mentioning Aircrack in the thread title and indicating you'd like to genericly run the Backtrack tools, you haven't really said what you're attempting to do. Different tools and different OSs require different cards. Because of this fact, I typically carry about a half-dozen cards.

If you just want to run Aircrack, then you might want to ask over at the Aircrack forums for recommendations. If you want to run the other Backtrack tools, then take a look over are the Backtrack forums.

My original intention was simply to be able to crack WPA-encrypted networks. Now, however, looking at the tools available in BackTrack, I confess I would like to play with them.

First priority, though, is definitely WEP/WPA cracking. I don't know much about hardware, so if you could just tell me which USB card you use for Aircrack?

Thanks.

PS: I did post in the other forums, but no one has been as helpful as you. I got replies very similar to that of itsnotme up above.

Then let me be more helpful. Does the letters "S.E" mean anything to you?
If not, why not be Social and research it some, you might find that within you lies an Engineer.

Starpoint, you're so cryptic sometimes, even I can't understand what you are try to get at.

Edited per Streaker69 correcting me once again. This time use of the word cryptive, which is not a word. It sounded good in my head though.

You mean you did not get your Captain Midnight secret decoder ring when you joined?

I tried it and WOW it sure does make a difference. Seeing that Cryptive isn't even a word. Thanks, when I come out with my book I'll have to give you Proof Reader credits.

We've been waiting for the version of the decoder ring that can translate from the NS cipher to Cajun-speak.
Unfortunately our supplier has run into some problems with the tests, due to the Cajun-speak dictionary containing words like "cryptive".
Every ring that tried to decode a coded message where that word would be in the Cajun-speak cleartext, just plain exploded.
Untill that problem has been solved, you will not be issued a decoder ring.
