Cap an Pcap

Hi, I dont know if this has been answered (i searched the forums and google for about 10 min) but whats the difference between cap and pcap? Im trying to save packet captures in the pcap format for aircrack but everything is just ".cap" Im assuming that pcap is an open source version of cap? How do I convert the captured cap files into the pcap format?

Im using CommView to capture them since Airopeek wont allow more than 250 packets on a demo, also when I save, do I want to save everything? or just the packet capture?

Thanks for the help, again I searched all over but have been unable to find a difference in the files.

Sorry for my bad english too
