GPS Map Software for Ketchikan, AK
Hello All,
I havn't made a post to date yet in the NetStumbler forums. I have been reading everything I can about how the program works, and the ethics behind it. Seems like most everyone has a some what unified stance that this program should be used to enhance the general public's knowledge about security vunerabilities in today's wireless networks. I couldn't agree with this common census more. I have taken 2 years of Cisco networking classes to date, and hope to obtain my CCNA cert. soon. I'm an active duty Coast Guard member, currently stationed in Ketchikan, AK. I've enrolled in Cisco's new wireless 802.11 certification course for this fall, at the local community college. Netstumbler has provided me with a way to get a jump start on the policies and practices of the wireless networking world. I had a quick questioin in regards to GPS, and the state of Alaska. I have researched online, looking at Microsoft's Street's and Trips 2005, as well as DeLorme's Street Atlas USA 2005. I cannot however confirm that either of these programs have maps for the Ketchikan, AK area. I know that in my current location, I can't expect anything amazing from either one of these products, but I would like something simple. I don't think anyone has ever stumbled Ketchikan, AK before, maybe I will be the first one to do it. Anyway, any help in the matter would be great. Thanks in Advance For anyone wondering exactly what Ketchikan, AK looks like just click on the links http://tinypic.com/201qvb http://tinypic.com/201qw1 http://tinypic.com/201qw6 |

SA 6 covers it so I would imagine 2005 would as well.
Also to save you some problems in the future, read the forum descriptions. This post would have been better placed in "Software" / "Windows". Last edited by wrzwaldo : 03-03-2005 at 01:46 PM. |

I can confirm that MS S&T 2003 has Ketchikan, and if S&T has it, then MapPoint also has it.
Here's a screenshot at max resolution, and you can see the scale in the upper right.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Yes, looks like either of the two software applications will work for what I'm trying to do. Thanks for the screen shot Streaker and Thorn. From your experience with either product, do they constantly come out with reliable updates for their maps? |

I've seen some things not change on maps for a couple of years around here, so don't count on any mapping software to be updated quickly.

Yes, I should have figured as much. I was at least concerned with the street names being included on my maps. There are only 50 miles of road here where I live. Believe me, I'm not getting this software to have turn by turn directions to the one and only Wal-Mart (Yes, we have one). But thanks again...

I think that Delorme has an option to keep the street names on all the time at the higher zoom levels.

Ahhh, well that's an interesting feature. I didn't know that would be an issue, but are there any other idiosyncrasies about the program's that I should know about? I'm looking to possibly purchase on of these options soon. If you had to pick between the two (Microsoft / DeLorme), which would you go with?

Street name displaying is somewhat dependant on zoom level. By the way, S&T is about $30, MapPoint is about $200. Unless you have extra cash or need the extra processing available in MapPoint, S&T is the better value for just stumbling.

Delorme has a very cool interface that gives Heading, Speed, Altitude and shows you satellite information. Plus the map is more configurable. I like the search and routing interface in S&T better than Delorme. I think Delorme's interface for plotting a route is harder to use than S&T.

Yes Streaker,
From what I have been reading online, I get a funny feeling that MS didn't exactly plan to have a GPS functionality shipped with their product either. GPS is one of the major factor's contributing to the decision process for this buy. Sounds like DeLorme has won me over on this one. The DeLorme package with their GPS receiver is only about $15 more than MS's with thier GPS. Thanks again for all of the input on everyone's behalf. Great advice! ![]() |

Being in a middle of nowhere AK city as well I'll let you in on a little secret. Even if the streets are there, their data might be wrong. Using S&T 2005 Standing in my driveway it shows my address as being waaaay down teh street. They have the addresses backwards. At least they changed the name, I sent in a fix about a year and a half ago with an older version of trips. Had some wierd name that doesn't now or ever exist...
