Having concluded that Netgear's own drivers for the MA401 are pants, I'm trying to install Intersil's reference drivers - and having a spot of bother...
Right-click Network Neighbourhood, Adaptors tab, Add..., Have Disk..., point at the correct directory - can't find oemsetup.INF Not surprising - there isn't one. Okay - rename netprism.INF as oemsetup.INF - still can't find oemsetup.INF Ahh! It's that NT4 bug, when there's no [PlatformsSupported] in the inf file. Okay - add a [PlatformsSupported] PCMCIA to the eomsetup.INF - and now it bleats that it's the wrong format! Let's go to manual... Copy the SYS's to winnt\system32\drivers, the CLP and DLL's to winnt\system32, and the original INF to winnt\inf - right-click INF, Install, chug-chug-chug, corresponding PNF appears. Shutdown and restart - Prism Settings appears in control panel, double-click it, "No card found, will quit". Okay - right-click Network Neighbourhood, Properties, Adaptors tab, err - there's nothing there! WTF is going on?! Somebody must have got this working - the INF claims that it's for NT... Help!!! |

NT is short for "Nice Try". Any PnP support in that operating system is sketchy at best...besides, NS isn't going to be able to use the card in NT, because it requires the NDIS 5.1 interface, which isn't available in NT. You'll need to go to 2k or xp (won't recommend Win9x/ME to anyone).

I'm well aware that NT has no PnP support - PnPISA doesn't count in my book...
I find that NS works perfectly well under NT4SP6a using NDIS 5.1 - my problem is the Netgear utility software itself. Trying to switch configurations between home and work (and places inbetween ) is flaky at best, and nigh on impossible at worst. So, to my original question - can anybody help me install Intersil's reference drivers for NT, under NT. |
