Home Networks and Intrusion

Yes, I have a home metwork that I share with another computer. We both have Linksys USB Wireless 54G adapters and Windows Xp. Is it possible for someone to actually come into our network and look at our documents and actually see Windows. I have the Xp Firewall and a Mcafee one up and running. No Wep Yet!

Yep. A firewall will do nothing for you since it's only protecting the internet side. When you have a wireless network, it's behind the firewall, and anyone connecting to it would also be behind it. Therefore, they could in theory have full access to all your machines.

Running 2 software firewalls is not a good idea. If you are not using encryption, it is possible for them to read the data you are transmitting. Firewalls are usually good enough to stop most remote attacks.

Edit: My shift key is a little sticky... Don't ask!

I thought he said software firewalls, but I have a few more questions...

Are you using ad-hoc mode?

If you are using an ap, and do have an internet connection, they could do illegal things with your internet that YOU would be responsible for!

I would recommend Access Point (AP) instead simple adapter. Then you can filter MAC addresses of clients, who may connect to your network.
Anyway I would recommend don't use default SSID for your AP and choose some name NOT personally connected with you or your address. Choose hidden mode so no one can see your AP exists (yes, there are another ways how to discover..., but). Use AES-PSK encryption and at least 128 bit key. Use directed aerials between you and your friend, so you can use lower output power and be more hidden.
