How to setup your Netgear WAG511 to work with Net Stumbler.
Browse to the wag511 configuration utility directory, run rmdrv1.exe and exit out of the netgear tray icon. Then run netstumbler. If you're like me you may want to automate the process. (download kill.exe from www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/kill.zip ) Then create this little batch file, be sure to change the locations. cd\ cd batch KILL -f wlancfg.exe KILL -f wlancfg2.exe cd\ cd program files cd netgear cd wag511 configuration utility START /WAIT rmdrv1.exe cd\ cd program files cd network stumbler START /WAIT NetStumbler.exe cd\ cd program files cd netgear cd wag511 configuration utility START /WAIT wlancfg.exe -------------------------------------------- This will stop the Netgear, run netstumbler, and when you exit netstumbler it will restart the netgear. |

Well, this procedure works on my wg511t. Its a slight different file name, its PCArMdrv.exe in the install folder for the drivers, so I'm sure you could get it to work for yours as well.
The weird thing being that if I use this method I can get netstumbler to run, and once its running, I can re-open the Netgear Config Utility and it runs with Netstumbler open. Only seems to have a problem if the ut is running when it launches... peculiar. |

Thank you for this information, but it dosn't work. I tried the procedure manualy: Exit WG511WLU.exe, run PCARmDrv.exe and then NetStumbler.exe... card not found...
Are there any alternate driver (Prism e.g.) or other thinks possibele? Last edited by rr63 : 02-09-2004 at 12:55 PM. |

Thanks for the info vBot! Although I'm using a Linksys WPC54G NIC, your info led me in the right direction to getting NS working with it. The Linksys configuration utility was causing NS to fail when it was detecting the card (yeah, I know... this probably falls under the "duh..." catagory
). I removed it from my startup group, and now NS works great. |

WAB501 Configuration Utility
I tried to follow these directions for my WAB501 a/b but I don't seem to have anything similar. My "WAB501 Configuration Utility" directory doesn't contain many files, and I didn't see any processes running that looked like the ones you mentioned. I see that netstumbler lists my card under Devices as "NETGEAR WAB501 802.11a/b Wireless Adapter NDIS 5.1". The line above it states the same thing, but says "Atheros (unsupported)" for the chipset. I'm not having any luck with this card for any of the different programs available that I've tried. Has anyone had any luck with this card?
Thanks for the help vBot! |

ok sothing new i found, i dont know if its NS or windows causing the problem. yeah yeah i know its an unsupported card... but in device it has my card twice and one has (atrhoes unsopported) at the end and the other has NDIS 5.1 at the end and its selected.... now i can start NS and find the AP in my house. but if i shift mylatop a little it picks up a distant ap and windows auto connects and NS closes at the same time, if i turn off my wg511t's antenna in settings NS stays open just saying it cant find any aps.the reason im not sure if its ns is because windows autoconnects to that distant AP at the same time NS closes. Windows doesnt connect to my home AP because i have 128bit on and the key isnt on my laptop. so NS finds my home AP and so does windows. and everything is fine. but the second windows connects to that distant AP, NS closes..... any way i can stop windows from autoconnecting?

I have a Netgear WAG511, but I can't get it to work with NetStumbler 0.4.0 on Windows 2000.

I worked out that if I inserted the NETGEAR WAG511 card after starting NetStumbler 0.4.0 then NS would detect the card and work the way I would expect.
However it doesn't work if I start NS after the card was already inserted. I guess some Windows process has already taken control of one or more resources by that stage. Shrug. |
