Question NetStumbler crashes in XP Pro

I have a Toshiba laptop with the Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI card. NetStumbler had been working just fine. I recently did two things:

1. I tried to "upgrade" wi-fi service to WPA encryption. This wasn't successful so I went back to WEP.

2. I loaded Windows 2000 NetBEUI drivers to speed up my mixed network (two winxp, one win98). This worked tremendously. See http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/38.htm#tipadaweek for details.

However, NetStumbler now opens, sees my wireless network, and crashes immediately. Needless to say I tried uninstalling/reinstalling.

Anyone have a clue about this? Thanks.

Try stopping the wireless zero config service, unchecking the "use windows to configure my wireless network settings," and disabling TCP/IP. If you have a G card, try setting it to use B mode. If your are using a client manager other than the xp one, try uninstalling it.

Talking

I changed the device from

Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card NDIS 5.1

to

Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card ORiNOCO

and it hasn't crashed since. I'm really glad too because I didn't want to have to get a new wireless card.

Now if I can just get the freakin' WPA to work . . .

Same Issue

I installed netstumbler and it worked until I restarted and now I have the same issue. I starts up for one second and then terminates. Does anyone know if there is anything to look for in the event log?

This is well documented, and is usually cased by a unsupported card. All this is is explained in the forums.

It might work if you stand on your right foot, hold your left leg straight out and bend your knee at a 45deg. angle back, have your laptop balanced on top of your head, face south, point your left hand to the east and rub your tummy with your right hand. All while chanting "I will buy a supported card" twenty five times.
