I personally use (and like) this one. . It's friggin tiny and you can't beat it for the price. Comes in serial flavors too...

Not bad, and a really good price too. The *only* downside to it is the the stated accuracy is +/- 20 meters. Most gps's are +/- 15 meters. Thats a difference on 15, which for the price, isnt too bad, but imho, could be a little better. This might be on my shopping list in the future as a standalone GPS device.

You can stop the OS trying to identify serial mice on your ports, which should stop the problem you're experiencing. Article Q283063 from Microsoft tells you how.

MS Knowledge Base Article & XP

Thanks for pointing out the MS Knowledge Base article GC. There is one thing I would like to point out...

At the top of the article, as always, the affected operating systems (OSs) are listed. In this case, the WIN 2K family of OSs. However, further down in the article under the STATUS section, the last sentence mentions that this applies to XP as well.

I haven't applied this fix to my XP based Vaio notebook yet but I intend to.

This also saves you a TON of money, no need to drop 250 bucks for mappoint now !

I picked up MS streets and trips at best buy for 30 bucks !

Damn, I just realized I wasted time writing my own program to do this. Jesus, and I just posted it in the OT forum too.

Damnit. And I thought I was being helpful.

Somehow I missed this.

So, if XP detected my GPS as a serial mouse it's not going to work?

The deluo software that came with the GPS has a reg file that will solve that problem, I think it's called sermouse.reg?

Question Route 66

Has anyone experimented with R66 mapping software ?

I (will, when it comes thorugh !) have a Deluo GPS USB unit, plugged into a Thinkpad X30 (on a Toyota 4Runner)

R66 has imho the best euro zone maps - and it's not cheap, so I'd hate to think I got the wrong SW

Also...

About the GPS being detected as a mouse...

I know this is mentioned in the Microsoft Article above, but an easier workaround instead of modifying your registry, is to simply disable the "mouse" in your device manager when it first happens. I did this and never had any problems again.

Best priced GPS that I've found...

The best priced GPS receivers that I've found are the Deluo and the Saphire.
I bought the Deluo universal with serial adapter for $99 at www.deluo.com
You can get a PPC adapter as well as a USB adapter to fit.
My only issue is that it doesn't reach the satelites in bad weather... Well, I guess you get what you pay for.
