USB GPS Mouse - Question

Hey there,

I got a USB GPS Mouse, GlobalSAT SiRF III chipset and its working nicely although I have one question.

Do GPS' go out of range or shutdown at all?

Im using 'GPS TrackMaker' [freeware] and it uses Google Earth and a lot of other free features. The program stated 'No Data' after 15mins on loading the program. It worked fine and just stopped, Im in Belfast Ireland and it stated I was in Dublin Ireland just before the GPS lost data/signal, I dont really know.

Anyone familar with this? Is it natural? Do I have to keep exiting the program and re-enabling the program?

Thanks.

EDIT: Is there a lack of satellites? My GPS software shows 26 sometimes then I only get a reading from 2 of them and it doesnt even fix on my Lat and Lon. It feels like it takes the GPS to be on for 20mins before it works, then it only works for 15mins. Nothing wrong with it, Im still get packets sent from the GPS to satellites as seen in the program that came with my GPS.

I am using it on my computer in my house, could this be a problem?

To maintain a GPS lock the receiver must pick up at least 3 satellites. To have a 3D lock, I believe it has to have at least 4. Any less than 3, it will not be able to track your position.

Yes, using a GPS inside the house is a problem. Take it outside.

Haha, aye.

Its in my house because I havent got a laptop yet. I was editing that while you replied so by the time I finished you already replied.

Anyway, Now I know now thanks to Streaker, Thorn and theprez. I just got it this morning and I have no clue about GPS'.

EDIT: Since I havent got a clue about GPS recievers is it possible to use it with NetStumbler/Kismet to log APs with a YAGI antenna whilst INSIDE my house? My location give me 3-4 Sats for about 15mins sometimes. I think I may be in a blackspot, even though there are thousands of people living in my area and Im also within 8 miles of City Centre...I wonder why there is blackspots.

NetStumbler and Kismet will both only record the location of the GPS unit when the find an AP. So, "yes, you can use a it with a yagi", but all you'll get is the location of your house, since that's where you are located. The information would be without value.

Most people get the laptop first, and then the GPS. A GPS mouse without a laptop is pretty useless.

Concurred with Thorn, altough a GPS mouse (with a clear view to the sky) attached to a server or desktop machine is a costeffective way of setting up a NTP server on the network. Just make sure you can get PPS output from it, or your precision won't be better than +/- 1 second.

Did I say the server or desktop machine should have a clear view ? Hang the GPS mouse out through the window or put it up on the roof.. Sheesh, do we have to spell everything out in details for people ??
